How to Start and Complete the Out of Sight Quest in Gothic 1 Remake

Out of Sight is a quest in Gothic 1 Remake that you can pick up in Old Camp, and it hinges on getting Mordrag to leave. Your trip takes you from Old Camp to New Camp and then back again, with a few combat-ready caveats along the way. Here’s how to start it, bring Mordrag to the new location, return safely, and finish the job for Thorus.

Quest setup and what it affects

Out of Sight is available in Old Camp. Thorus hands you the quest after you’ve begun the Admission to the Old Camp quest by speaking with Diego. In this walkthrough, you’ll learn how to convince Mordrag to leave camp, plus how to travel back to Old Camp once you’ve completed the objective.

Out of Sight is also connected to finishing the Casting Shadows quest and Admission to the Old Camp. Completing Out of Sight improves your standing with Diego.

If you only need a particular step, these are the main objectives covered in this guide:

  • How to Start Out of Sight
  • Talk to Mordrag
  • Follow Mordrag to New Camp
  • How to Travel Back to Old Camp
  • Report Back to Thorus

How to start Out of Sight

Thorus is typically posted outside the entrance to the Old Camp Castle. You can talk to him whenever you want, but he won’t give you this quest until you’ve started Admission to the Old Camp by speaking with Diego first.

At the beginning of the game—or later while you’re in Old Camp, where you can find him near Thorus—you need to exhaust Diego’s dialogue until he provides information about joining Gomez and Old Camp. After that, Diego will direct you to speak with Thorus.

Thorus will give you a quick overview, but he’ll soon insist you go back to Diego about it. Once he’s said that, you can offer to help Thorus anyway. Keep pressing him until he asks you to remove a New Camper from Old Camp. That person is Mordrag, who has been stealing from the Ore Barons—so they want him gone. Do the task for Thorus without revealing who sent you, and he’ll vouch for you with Diego.

Before you commit

Finishing this quest removes Mordrag from Old Camp. While he’s there, Mordrag can also function as a vendor selling special items, so it’s worth weighing whether you want to lose that shop access. You can bring someone else in later, but you may prefer to keep Mordrag around a bit longer before sending him away.

Talk to Mordrag

  • In-game objective: “I gotta find Mordrag.”

Mordrag can be found just inside the South Gate exit of Old Camp, near the Market.

  • In-game objective: “I gotta get rid of Mordrag.”

Once you locate him, start a conversation. Tell him “You’ve got a problem.” After that, he’ll explain New Camp and offer to take you there.

Choose your dialogue carefully

If you tell Mordrag “This camp isn’t big enough for the two of us” before saying “You’ve got a problem”, he won’t agree to take you to New Camp. At that point, your only way to complete the mission would be to clear him out through combat.

If you lead with “You’ve got a problem.”, you should still have the option to go with him instead of fighting.

Also, if you say “This camp isn’t big enough for the two of us” and then pick another response, you’ll trigger a fight with Mordrag. Don’t bring up Thorus’ name if you want to keep Thorus on your good side. If you’re early in the game, it’s unlikely you’ll win that fight—so it’s usually better to accept the guided trip to New Camp.

Follow Mordrag to New Camp

When you decide to have Mordrag leave, you must stick with him all the way to New Camp before Thorus will accept that Mordrag is gone. The walk can be risky if you’re still getting your footing, so stay close and let Mordrag handle most of the fighting.

“That’s Bait”

If Mordrag’s health starts dropping and you’re worried he might not make it, you can temporarily draw enemy attention by acting as bait. Get the monsters to focus on you before they finish their advance on him. Keep in mind that many of these foes are tougher than what you fought at the start of the game, so don’t let them land hits on you.

New Camp lies mostly to the west, and the route from Old Camp is fairly direct. After you leave Old Camp via the South Gate with Mordrag, he turns right and moves around Old Camp’s outer perimeter while attacking Adult Scavengers as you go.

As you circle the outside of Old Camp, you’ll reach a downhill path branching away from a signpost to the west. That trail runs all the way to New Camp, but you’ll run into plenty of enemies along the way—so stay with Mordrag for protection.

Save often

Save frequently. A good rhythm is saving either right before or right after you defeat a group of enemies, in case Mordrag doesn’t survive the route or you get taken out at an inconvenient moment.

As the path slopes downhill and starts leveling out, there’s usually a lone Adult Scavenger just off the trail to the right. It’s likely to notice you. Mordrag will probably step off the path to remove it, then resume leading you forward.

Along the way, you’ll pass two different hunter’s huts. When you continue uphill after the first one, you’ll run into a couple of Goblins patrolling the trail. Watch for rock throws—those hits are surprisingly painful. Mordrag can manage these encounters, but if you think his health is in danger, you can distract the attackers first and then let Mordrag take the pressure.

Continue uphill and angle left away from the first hut.

Next, you’ll meet a group of Scavengers on the path. There are more of them here, but they aren’t as dangerous as the adult variants, so Mordrag’s survival matters less in this segment.

After you clear them out, keep following the uphill trail until you spot the second hut. Stay on the path and walk past it on the hut’s right-hand side.

As the uphill route bends left, you’ll see two men posted near a wooden bridge. If you’re traveling with Mordrag, they won’t bother you, but on the way back they’ll still be around and looking to pressure people—so keep them in mind for the return trip.

Once you cross the bridge, turn left at the intersection, then slide right along the cliff wall. Ahead is a final group of Bloodflies. Mordrag can handle them, so unless you have ranged options or prior experience fighting Bloodflies, it may be safer to hang back. If the swarm targets you, dodge sideways rather than backwards, since their attacks have a lot of reach.

After the Bloodflies are dealt with, all that remains is walking up to the main gates of New Camp. Mordrag will hand you a ring and advise you to show it to Lares if you want to join New Camp.

Once the cutscene ends, the Out of Sight objective will update. At that point, you’re free to return to Old Camp to finish Thorus’ request. There’s no urgency forcing you to leave immediately, though—if you want to explore New Camp first, you can.

How to travel back to Old Camp

Getting back is mostly a retrace of your outward route, but there are a couple of notable hazards. The biggest change is the presence of the Blackmailers.

Those bridge guards won’t give you a pass once Mordrag isn’t with you. They’re also a major annoyance, so save before you interact with them in case things spiral.

Buggy Blackmailers

From Kerry Palmer, Guides Editor ⚔️

My run-ins with the Blackmailers turned into a lot of sprinting away from them before I eventually tried paying. Sadly, every time I’ve attempted to pay them so far has triggered an endless loop: as soon as one conversation ends, they immediately start talking to me again, demanding more money even though I already paid. The only way I’ve managed to break the loop is to provoke them into a fight, and then I end up running away again like normal. If you take anything away from my experience, it’s this: run away before you pay.

Because they’re not looking toward New Camp, there’s a small window to crouch-walk to the far left side of the bridge (don’t run or sprint, or they’ll spot you), then slip left behind the Blackmailer who isn’t engaging you. If you manage to get past the guard without being stopped, keep pushing as far left as you can, then move parallel to the path for about five to ten seconds. After that, you should be out of their intimidation radius, and you can return to the main trail.

The timing is tight, and it’s harder to do the same maneuver in the opposite direction. You might still be stopped for a conversation, but I’ve been able to repeat the method multiple times. If you can’t get it to work, you’ll have to pay 10 Nuggets or refuse. If you refuse, it’s smart to run, since they’re quite strong if they connect.

Whether you’re fleeing the Blackmailers or just moving through the forest without issues, continue along the same path as it curves downhill and to the right, passing hanging cages. This is the main route back to Old Camp. After the next nearest hut, there’s a fork that was difficult to notice on the way out—take the left branch downhill to get back to Old Camp.

Use the Old Camp Castle Tower as your compass

If you ever lose your bearings, remember two simple navigation cues. First, if you can see the top of the Old Camp Castle Tower ahead above the surrounding environment, you’re traveling the right way.

Second, if you’re walking past the bodies of creatures Mordrag already dropped before, you’re again moving in the right direction.

You’ll encounter two hunter’s huts along the path you traveled earlier. If you can, stop and speak with those hunters, since they may teach skill options such as Archery, or skills focused on harvesting components from the creatures you hunt.

After you’ve passed both huts, the route levels out and splits into two directions. One option goes under a broken bridge on the right, while the other continues left. There are dangerous enemies under the bridge, so stay clear of that side and go left to keep returning.

If you stay on the same trail and keep moving away from New Camp, you’ll eventually reach an intersection where you can see Old Camp’s walls again. From there, you can circle either side of the walls to enter, but Mordrag cleared enemies on your right-hand approach during the trip to New Camp—so that direction is generally the safer choice.

Report back to Thorus

With Mordrag gone and you back in Old Camp, talk to Thorus to finish the quest. Tell him “That guy won’t ever show up here again.” You’ll receive 250 experience points, and Thorus will also back you up if Diego asks around town about you.
