Vanished Warder Quest Guide: Find Nek and Return to Sly in Gothic 1 Remake
The Vanished Warder is a side quest in Gothic 1 Remake. In Old Camp, one of the Shadows—Sly—is searching for a missing friend named Nek. Your job is to track Nek down, deal with the dangers you run into along the way (including Molerat threats), and then return to Sly with proof. Here’s a full, step-by-step walkthrough to help you complete the quest.

How to Start The Vanished Warder Quest
Head to the right of Old Camp’s main entrance and follow the upper path. Along the way, you’ll find a Shadow named Sly (and no, his last name is not Cooper).
Sly has work lined up for a greenblood like you. He explains that Nek has gone missing recently and asks you to search for him. He also gives you a chain of instructions: first speak to Fletcher, who will point you to Snaf the Cook, who will then tell you where to go. If you’d rather skip ahead, jump to the section titled “Find Nek.” Otherwise, follow every clue in order below.
Talk to Fletcher
- In-game objective – “Fletcher knows something about Nek.”
Fletcher is a Shadow who patrols behind the arena. You can find him to the left of Old Camp’s main entrance.
He’s out here helping with Nek’s responsibilities because Nek isn’t present to do the job himself. The most useful lead Fletcher can offer is that Snaf the Cook may know more about where Nek currently is.
Talk to Snaf
- In-game objective – “Snaf could know something about this.”
Snaf can be found close to the arena, positioned back toward the main entrance. At the bottom of a hill sits a cauldron, and during the day Snaf uses it about 90% of the time.
As it turns out, Snaf had asked Nek to gather mushrooms from a nearby cave. Snaf says Nek left through the South Gate about a week ago and never came back. Your next step is to locate that cave and check what happened.
Find Nek
- In-game objective – “I gotta find Nek”.
Leave Old Camp by heading to the South Gate. It’s located inside the ruins of a damaged tower, and you’ll pass the arena on your way from the main entrance. Create a new save once you’re outside of the camp. Then continue down the path in front of you until you reach a point not far away where a large boulder provides cover—behind it, on the right side, you should spot a cave protected by three Molerats.
Equip your weapon and try to pull them away one at a time so you’re not fighting all three at once. These Molerats are generally easier than Juvenile Scavengers because you can sometimes stun them, but they can still overwhelm you quickly if you don’t pick your openings carefully.
After you defeat the Molerats, collect any mushrooms nearby, then enter the cave. Inside you’ll find Nek’s body. Take everything from him and everything else inside the cave. This includes Nek’s Withered Axe, a weapon that hits harder and also swings faster than anything you’ve likely found so far.
Report Back to Sly
- In-game objective – “I should inform Sly.”
Return to Sly and let him know what you found. At this stage, he requests proof that Nek is truly dead. If you want to finish the quest and claim the XP, you must hand over the amulet. Even though it’s a useful item to keep, the reward in experience is better.
Once you give Sly the amulet, you’ll receive 250 experience points. On top of that, Sly will also vouch for you when you go speak with Diego and Thorus about joining the Shadows.
