A Letter for the Fire Mages: How to Reach Them in the Old Camp
A Letter from the Fire Mages kicks off your adventure right at the beginning. After the opening cutscene, your unnamed character is tasked with delivering a letter to the Fire Mages—then you’re quickly pushed into the massive dome that surrounds the colony.
To actually reach the Fire Mages in the Old Camp castle, you’ll need to complete a chain of smaller errands and side quests so you can gain access to the right area. This guide breaks down the path step by step.
- Travel to Old Camp
- Gain Entry to Old Camp Castle
- Talk to the Fire Mages
Travel to Old Camp
- In-game objective: “I gotta find a Fire Mage to give the letter to.”
At the very start, you’ll meet Diego, who handles the new convicts. Talk to him to learn about the camps in the region, how you can join his group, and you can even ask about how to get a weapon nearby. Your choices don’t change the outcome here: once you finish speaking with Diego, he gives you some notes and then heads down through the mining valley toward Old Camp.
To keep moving toward the Fire Mages, you’ll need to make your way into Old Camp and get oriented once you arrive. If you want more on the early moments, check the Chapter 1: Welcome to the Colony Walkthrough.
Old Camp is the large settlement you’ll spot as you come down the hill from where you started. Entry is required if you want to continue this quest.
When you reach the gates, stop and speak with the Gate Guard. To pass through, you must persuade him. If you talked to Diego earlier, tell the guard that Diego is expecting you. If you didn’t speak to Diego, you can respond that you can’t afford the 10 Nuggets the guard wants—doing so will still let you through.
Gain Entry to Old Camp Castle
With the first gate behind you, Old Camp opens up with plenty to do. However, to find the Fire Mages, you’ll have to get into the castle. The entrance is guarded by Thorus, the knight at the front—so you’ll need to “grease the wheels” with him. You can do this in one of two ways:
- Pay Thorus 1000 Nuggets (which is a lot of currency this early in the game), or
- Advance the Admission to the Old Camp quest by impressing Diego.
To have Diego vouch for you, you’ll need to complete multiple side quests within Old Camp and reach Level 5. These are the side quests you can work through to help with castle entry:
- The Vanished Warder — Talk to Sly on the west side of Camp.
- Whistler’s Sword — Talk to Whistler near the market.
- The Cult’s Recipe — Talk to Dexter (requires traveling to Swamp Camp).
- Out of Sight — Talk to Thorus after talking to Diego; it requires fighting Mordrag, or having Mordrag show you to New Camp.
- A New Fence for Fisk — Unlocks after removing Mordrag from Old Camp; requires a visit to New Camp.
- A Ring for Fingers — Talk to Fingers near the Arena.
- Impress Scatty — After talking to Diego, challenge Kharim to a fight in the Arena, then speak to Scatty after the match.
A Place to Call Home
If you need a spot to sleep for time progression or a place to stash extra items, talk to Guy and take advantage of the free Hut he provides. More details are available in the guide How to Get A Hut and Bed For Free (in Old Camp).
After you’ve completed at least three of the side quests listed above, Diego will offer you a new quest called Test of Faith. You must finish this quest to keep progressing Admission to the Old Camp, which is what gets you into the inner ring of Old Camp.
Once you’ve gathered enough progress from the objectives above, return to Diego for his seal of approval. After that, speak with Thorus again—he’ll allow you to pass into the inner ring of Old Camp.
Talk to the Fire Mages
Once you pass Thorus, turn left into the courtyard.
Move forward until you see a man in red robes standing in front of a castle doorway on your right.
That’s Milten. Now you can finally deliver the letter you were given at the start of the game.
Approach him to begin the conversation. If you tell him you have the letter, he’ll be eager to see it and will ask to view the letter first. You can choose how to handle the exchange:
- You can give the letter after a reward, or
- You can let him read it first.
If you demand a reward and only agree to hand the letter to Torrez, the quest ends after you receive your reward. In this case, you won’t get the option to pick your reward.
Milten will go inside and then return to tell you to collect your reward and deliver the letter to Torrez. Torrez can be found in the temple courtyard next door. He will give you the Ring of Power, which grants +5 Strength while worn. After that, the quest ends with 200 Experience Points.
If you let Milten read the letter, the quest concludes immediately with 200 Experience Points. Milten then comes back and tells you to get your reward from Torrez. Compared to the reward-demanding approach, Torrez will allow you to choose your reward.
- Essence of Spirit potion (Max Mana +2)
- Scrolls (single-use spells of Fireball, Ball Lighting, and Transform into Fire Lizard)
- Ring of Lesser Dexterity (Dexterity +5)
- Ring of Power (Strength +5)
Now that you’re inside the Old Camp inner ring, you can also push forward with other story quests, including Admission to the Old Camp.
