The bad night energy turns into a full-on nightmare when an intruder (Troy Baker) shows up in Ava’s apartment with a knife, moving in for the kill. The game wastes no time throwing you into a tense, up-close encounter where the only real goal is escape before the killer catches up. Unhinged is Netflix’s new interactive horror game, and it gives players the option to switch between standard play and a story-focused difficulty. That choice matters early, because it changes how much time you’re given during key escape moments.
How to Escape the Apartment in Netflix’s Unhinged (First Encounter With Killer)
Once Ava finally gets her first run-in with the killer inside her apartment, the situation tightens fast. She’ll begin to back away, and you’ll see a white meter appear at the top of the screen that slowly drains. That bar is your urgency indicator: Ava needs to act quickly if she’s going to slip out of the killer’s reach.
If you selected Story mode, the escape segment to the bathroom comes with an effectively unlimited time window, which makes the early portion easier to manage and less punishing if you’re still getting used to the game’s interaction rhythm.
To start the escape, pan your smartphone (your controller) toward the right side of the room and interact with the Marble Bookend (the weight) sitting on the bookshelf. Ava will use it to strike the killer, buying herself enough time to sprint away and get inside the bathroom.
Inside the bathroom, the killer doesn’t just wait. He starts pounding on the door, and that kicks off a fresh timer—meaning you have limited time before he forces entry. First, turn around and interact with the window. Unfortunately, it’s locked, so you can’t just slip out immediately.
You can also grab a small piece of wood from the paint can on the floor, but it’s not a reliable solution and will break off quickly.
To actually open the window, Ava needs to locate a screwdriver in Unhinged on Netflix—described as the only item that can unlock it. Turn back toward the bathroom door and check the rack positioned right in front of Ava. You’ll get an interaction prompt to grab the screwdriver from the rack. With it in hand, use it to open the window, then move out toward the fire escape.
With Ava out of immediate danger, the escape isn’t over—it’s just quieter. She has to cross the fire escape silently and reach the far end of the balcony. At the top, interact with the ladder to bring it down. That lets Ava escape to the upper level of the apartment building, where Noah (her friend) lives in Unhinged on Netflix.
