Gothic 1 Remake Casting Shadows Guide: Old Camp Reputation Explained

In Gothic 1 Remake, the quest Casting Shadows shows how your reputation grows with the people of Old Camp. It also feeds directly into the broader Admission to the Old Camp questline—so getting it done means more than just ticking off a side objective.

Checklists

Casting Shadows is a quest in Gothic 1 Remake that tracks how many individuals you’ve managed to impress within Old Camp. Finishing Casting Shadows is tied to one of the goals inside the Admission to the Old Camp quest chain.

Many of the side missions listed below can be completed without worrying about Casting Shadows. If you begin Casting Shadows after completing some of them first, the quest tracker will still register your earlier progress.

How to Start Casting Shadows

To begin Casting Shadows, you must first speak with Diego. This can happen either right at the start of the game or later once you’re in Old Camp, as long as you talk to him about joining Gomez’ crew for Old Camp. Doing that kicks off the Admission to the Old Camp quest.

After that, speak with Thorus, the knight who stands guard near Old Camp Castle. Tell him you want to join Gomez’ crew and that Diego sent you to speak with him. Thorus explains that someone important to Old Camp—such as Diego—needs to vouch for you before you’ll be allowed in. Go back to Diego for the next step, and the Casting Shadows quest will start.

Supporters Among the Shadows

  • In-game objective – “I need supporters among the Shadows.”

The first requirement is intentionally broad, but it’s tied to whether you have enough backing to impress Diego. As you complete Old Camp tasks that match this goal, the quest tracker adds fresh objectives so you can see what has been done.

Related Quests

These objectives all count toward Casting Shadows. If you need specifics for any of them, you can follow each quest’s own page to finish that particular job.

  • I could get Sly to recommend me. (The Vanished Warder)
  • I could help Whistler get his sword back. (Whistler’s Sword)
  • I could get Fingers to vouch for me. (A Ring For Fingers)
  • Thorus has a task for me. (Out of Sight)
  • I could try and convince Fisk. (A New Fence for Fisk)
  • I could help Dexter (The Cult’s Recipe)

How to Impress Scatty

* In-game objective – “I could impress Scatty.”

Besides the quests above, there’s one reputation action that doesn’t have its own separate side quest entry: talking to Scatty, the Arena manager of Old Camp. He’s a bald guard you can locate either outside the arena’s front entrance or behind the Arena, depending on the time of day.

Once Casting Shadows has been initiated via your conversation with Diego, you can ask Scatty if he can do anything to help your standing. He’ll respond that challenging his fighters is the way to make an impression.

Right now, Scatty has three fighters available for the arena:

  • Kirgo (Old Camp Shadow)
  • Kharim (New Camp Merc)
  • Gor Hanis (Swamp Camp Templar)

In most cases, you can find these fighters either just outside the arena entrance or inside the arena itself.

If you’re early in the process, you won’t be able to fight Gor Hanis because he won’t recognize you as a legitimate challenger. You can still take on Kirgo and Kharim, but Scatty won’t be impressed unless you challenge Kharim specifically.

To challenge Kharim, you need to push him into accepting. Start by asking him for a fight, then continue through the dialogue until you reach the option: “You’re only here to get a chance to kiss Gomez’ ass!” Choosing that line should make Kharim accept your challenge. He’ll then head into the arena with you for the fight.

After the arena match with Kharim—win or lose—return to Scatty and tell him how it went. He will acknowledge that you challenged Kharim, and reward you with 50 Experience points, plus a promise that he’ll vouch for you with Diego when the time comes.

How to Complete Casting Shadows

You’ll need to complete a sufficient number of the objectives above to impress Diego enough to finish the quest. In one run, the combination that triggered completion was:

  • Finished The Vanished Warder, Whistler’s Sword, A Ring for Fingers, Out of Sight, and A New Fence for Fisk.
  • Improved your standing with Scatty by challenging Kharim.

That setup covered everything except one of the possible reputation objectives you can complete before Diego accepts you. That said, different quests may carry different weight for Diego, so your results may vary.

Once you’ve completed enough objectives, speak with Diego again and ask, “How is my reputation in the camp?” He’ll review the people who have vouched for you, then tell you that you’ve done enough to earn his approval. At that point, Casting Shadows completes—and it also counts toward an objective in the Admission to the Old Camp questline.

Unfortunately, you do not receive any experience points for completing this mission. However, you can now enter Old Camp Castle, which lets you continue either the Admission to the Old Camp or A Letter from the Fire Mages quests.
