Gothic 1 Remake: How to Join the Old Camp Shadows Step by Step

Joining the Old Camp in Gothic 1 Remake is a multi-step process that effectively locks in your early-allegiance choice. If you want to join the Old Camp Shadows, you’ll work through a chain of objectives that revolves around convincing key people in the Outer Ring, securing supplies from the Old Mine, and finally earning Gomez’s trust. Along the way, you’ll also discover a few ways your dialogue choices can go badly—so saving often is more than good advice.

Old Camp admission checklist (Task Search)

Gothic 1 Remake offers three big early factions you can align with right at the start: the Old Camp Shadows, the New Camp bandits, and the Swamp Camp brotherhood. Picking one isn’t a single decision—it’s built from many smaller tasks grouped into larger “container” quests.

Admission to the Old Camp is the main quest that tracks your progress toward joining the Old Camp’s ranks. You’ll receive it automatically after speaking with Diego about joining the Old Camp—either at the beginning of the game or after you’re already in Old Camp.

Find Out How to Join Old Camp

  • In-game objective: “I gotta find out how to join the Old Camp.”

After you talk to Diego, your next move is to speak with Thorus about joining Gomez. Thorus explains that someone influential must back you—Diego being a prime example—and then he turns you away.

Go back to Diego and raise the same topic again. Diego’s hut sits directly in front of Thorus, so he should be close. Diego walks you through what you need to do: impress key people around the camp so you become a credible candidate for his endorsement. When you progress, Admission to the Old Camp updates and a new container quest, Casting Shadows, begins.

Impress the Most Influential People in the Outer Ring

  • In-game objective: “Impress the most influential people in the Outer Ring,” he said.’

This objective is tied directly to Casting Shadows. Casting Shadows is a container quest that tracks which Outer Ring figures you’ve impressed on the road to joining the Old Camp. Many of those NPCs require specific side work completed first, and Casting Shadows keeps tabs on that progress.

Get the Supply List From the Old Mine

  • In-game objective: “I’m supposed to get the supply list from the Old Mine.”

Once you complete three side quests linked to Casting Shadows, Diego offers you a new side quest called Test of Faith. Its completion is tracked under Admission to the Old Camp, and it’s required if you want Diego to be impressed. Diego’s task is simple in description: pick up a supply list from the Old Mine.

Do You Want to Be a New Camper?

Important fork in the road: if you intend to join the New Camp later, you’ll want to keep that list and bring it to their leader, Lares. Completing Test of Faith before you hand the list to Lares will exclude you from joining the New Camp, so pause on this quest if you want to keep your options open. You’ll still have to choose one route or the other eventually.

Level Up and Learn Skills

  • In-game objective: “I should improve my skills.”

If you finish the earlier steps before you reach Level 5, Diego tells you you’re still too inexperienced to join. He pushes you to gain skills—specifically by leveling up to Level 5. You’ll do that by earning experience from completing quests and defeating enemies in combat until you hit the required level.

Talk to Diego for His Approval

When you’ve checked off the objectives above, return to Diego again. Ask about your reputation within the camp, and he’ll finally approve you to speak with Thorus and enter the castle.

Talk to Thorus to Enter the Castle

  • In-game objective: “I should talk to Thorus.”

Speak to Thorus, tell him that Diego says you’re ready to talk to Gomez, and he should let you through.

Find and Talk to Gomez

  • In-game objective: “I’m allowed to talk to Gomez now.”

At this point you can enter the inner circle of Old Camp and the interior castle buildings. Inside, you’ll find the Warder barracks, the Fire Mages, and Gomez himself.

Where Are Those Pesky Fire Mages?

If you’ve been trying to reach the castle to progress the first quest, A Letter from the Fire Mages, you should now have access to the right NPCs to move that story forward. Go talk to Milten, the Fire Mage.

The main entrance to the castle interior is just past Thorus.

Walk up to the entryway and speak to the guard. Tell him Thorus sent you in, and he’ll begrudgingly allow you past.

Once inside, you need to speak with Raven, Gomez’ right-hand man. Your character will immediately mention Diego’s backing—assuming you completed Casting Shadows.

After that, Raven escorts you to Gomez’ audience chamber. Gomez is seated on a literal pile of Ore—so yes, the “Ore Barons” naming makes a bit more sense now.

Nearing the Point of No Return

You’re close to the end of this questline, but remember: finishing Admission to the Old Camp instantly blocks you from completing the Admission to the New Camp and Admission to the Swamp Camp quests. Once you’re in, you’re in, and you’ll continue the rest of the game under that allegiance. If you want to join a different camp—or even just see what the others can offer first—don’t complete this quest yet.

Make sure to save, as this conversation can end badly. Approach Gomez and tell him you want to work for him. He’ll ask why he should put his faith in you over anyone else.

No Mercy from Gomez

Avoid saying something like, “Do I need to chop your head off to prove I’m a good fighter?” unless you’ve saved recently. If you phrase it that way, Gomez will immediately stand up and try to kill you.

If you tell him you’ve been around and made friends across all the camps, he’ll want more detail about who you know.

To satisfy him, you must name four different people or groups you’ve impressed. In the example provided, the names included: “a couple of the baals of the Brotherhood,” “some fences from the new camp,” Lares, and Cor Kalom.

Don’t Lie!

Don’t claim you know Y’Berion. Gomez will recognize the lie and immediately try to kill you for dishonest behavior.

If your available list of acquaintances isn’t as large as the example, you may be forced into lying—and that still triggers an attempted kill. Reload your latest save and try meeting more people across the camps before attempting to talk to Gomez again.

Once you tell him who you know and impress him, he accepts you and that’s that: you’re officially a member of the Old Camp. Admission to the Old Camp completes and you earn 1,000 Experience Points. You can also start picking up and eating nearby castle food without upsetting anyone, letting you grab extra supplies in the area.

Next, talk to Raven to obtain a new piece of armor called Shadow’s Dress, plus a new quest, The Brotherhood’s Plan. This also marks the end of Chapter 1 and the beginning of Chapter 2: The Minecrawlers’ Nest.
