Star Wolf Raids Fichina: Retrieve the Defense Post From Andross’s Forces

Fichina is under attack by Andross’s forces. Your job is to travel to the planet and retrieve the former Defense Post from the enemy army. To make matters worse, Star Wolf—an infamous group of space pirates—has been spotted in the area, so expect the situation to stay tense and unpredictable.

Name Change: Fortuna no More

If you’ve only experienced Star Fox 64 on Nintendo 64, you might be thrown off by the fact that the level “Fortuna” is now labeled “Fichina.” Nintendo made this adjustment ahead of time for the 3DS version, Star Fox 64 3D, because “Fortuna” was the result of a translation mistake that showed up only in the English-language release of the original Star Fox 64.

Enter Star Wolf

The older Defense Base—shaped like a pyramid and located in the middle of a snowy combat zone—is now under assault. You and your squad must hold it off long enough to keep it standing. This mission plays entirely in free-roam form, so both you and the enemy forces can fly in any direction.

For medal progress, you’ll need to destroy 50 fighters. However, the primary win condition is preventing the base from being wiped out.

First Phase

The encounter is split into two phases. During the first stretch, you’ll fly around and take out as many enemy fighters as possible. You’ll encounter radar antennae and ground defenses, but those targets do not count toward your fighter-hit total. Only go after them if you need a Ring to refill or upgrade your shields, since chasing them can burn time that could cost you the medal. Destroying Invader ships may also reward you with a Silver Ring at times.

Second Phase: Team Star Wolf

Team Star Wolf arrives to kick off the second phase. Their Wolfen fighters are highly agile, and they can even deflect lock-on shots. Use the zoomed-out camera angle and your radar to spot them through the black icons. Then boost away, ease off your speed, and use bank turns to get your aim lined up before you start rapid-firing. Things intensify further because a bomb timer begins counting down.

Eliminating them before the timer ends is challenging because the Wolfen will climb into the sky after taking a few hits. When they break away, execute U-Turns to reverse direction and re-engage, or use a Loop maneuver when they attack from behind. When you close in, lock on and fire a bomb when you’re confident it will connect—this can give you an instant-kill. Each Wolfen you bring down is worth 10 bonus points; if you manage it quickly, you can reach an 11-point total per target. If you wait too long, the bonus drops to +5. Even so, since you’ve likely already shot down around 20 enemies during the earlier phase, defeating Star Wolf generally puts you over the 50-point medal threshold.

There are two possible outcomes. If you defeat Star Wolf before the bomb timer expires, Fox flies into the base and disarms the explosive, which leads to Path 1. If you fail to do so, the base is destroyed and the story moves to Path 2.

Path 1: Mission Critical

Requirement: Could not defeat Star Wolf before the timer runs out. The base is destroyed.

To take the Easy route, let the timer run down without defeating Star Wolf and watch the base get destroyed.

Mission Complete

The squad pulls away to head toward Sector X.

Path 2: Save the Station

Requirement: Shoot down all four Star Wolf team members before the timer runs out and defuse the bomb. The base is saved.

If you manage to destroy all four members of Team Star Wolf before the countdown ends, Fox flies into the military base and defuses the bomb. The station survives, the team regroups, and then launches into the next assignment: investigating reports of a bio-weapon on the scorching planet Solar.

Mission Accomplished

The next mission takes place on Solar.

Fichina Medal Rewards and Requirements

Taking down Team Star Wolf is a key part of maximizing your medal score. Each downed Wolfen fighter grants a 10-point bonus per target if you finish them early. If you bring them down later, you still get a bonus, but it drops to +5.
