Gothic 1 Remake: How to Unlock Test of Faith in the Old Mine
Gothic 1 Remake players who are working through the Old Camp leadership chain can now tackle the quest Test of Faith—a Diego assignment that sends you to the Old Mine to locate Ian, then report back with a supply list. Here’s how to unlock it, survive the trip, find Ian, and handle the Minecrawlers if you draw their attention.
Checklists
Test of Faith is a quest for Diego in Gothic 1 Remake that becomes available after you complete three or more major quests in Old Camp tied to Casting Shadows. You’ll also need to finish multiple Casting Shadows objectives alongside Test of Faith to move forward with Admission to the Old Camp. This walkthrough covers how to start the mission, reach the Old Mine, locate Ian, and then return the required information.

How to Unlock and Start Test of Faith
Test of Faith comes with prerequisites you must clear before you can begin. These are tied directly to Admission to the Old Camp and Casting Shadows. Both quests start when you speak to Diego inside Old Camp, near the main gate entrance.
First, talk to Diego about joining Gomez to trigger Admission to the Old Camp. Then speak to Thorus, who is posted outside the Old Camp Castle entrance, and ask him about joining Gomez as well.
Thorus won’t accept you and instead points you toward finding someone—such as Diego—to vouch for your request. Go back to Diego and bring up joining Gomez again. This time, he’ll tell you that you need to help influential figures around Old Camp to earn his approval, which is when the Casting Shadows side quest begins.
To unlock Test of Faith, you must complete at least three Casting Shadows-related quests in Old Camp. The following quests count toward that requirement:
- The Vanished Warder
- Whistler’s Sword
- A Ring for Fingers
- Out of Sight
- A New Fence for Fisk
- The Cult’s Recipe
- Impress Scatty
After you’ve completed at least three of the quests above, return to Diego. When your dialogue includes the option “Am I ready for that test of yours?”, you’re cleared to start Test of Faith. Choose it to begin the quest. Diego will then ask you to travel to the Old Mine, find Ian, and tell him “The Crawlers are mighty hungry.”
Speak to Graham and Buy a Map (Optional)
- In-game objective – “Graham could give me a map”
If you request directions to the Old Mine, Diego will recommend that Graham—the local cartographer—can provide a map, but only if you tell Graham that Diego sent you. Graham can be found nearby, up the hill from the entrance to North Camp.
When you ask Graham for the map, he asks for 20 Nuggets as payment, even though Diego’s message suggests you should get it for free. You can handle it in a few ways:
- Pay the 20 Nuggets for the map.
- Refuse to pay and threaten Graham; he will then provide the map for free.
- Clarify that you believed it would be free—this won’t change anything.
- Leave without buying anything.
You don’t need the map to reach the Old Mine, but if you want to view it without paying (or forcing Graham’s hand), this guide includes a map reference and directions to help you reach the mines.
How to Travel to the Old Mine
- In-game objective – “I’m supposed to get the supply list from Ian.”
How to Survive the Journey to the Old Mine
The route to the Old Mine is packed with dangerous enemies, including Bloodflies and Scavengers. It’s smart to attempt the trip only after leveling up a bit for extra health, acquiring a ranged option like a Bow, or training up One-Handed Weapons by sparring with Scatty in the Old Camp Arena.
If you still want to push through earlier, you can sprint past threats, or travel alongside NPCs who are also heading the same way and let them handle some of the fighting.
Starting from the North Gate entrance to Old Camp, go straight along the main path until you cross the stone bridge. After that, take an immediate left to follow the trail that runs alongside the river.
There are plenty of Bloodflies, Molerats, and Scavengers ahead. Save your game as soon as you spot enemies nearby in case they overwhelm you.
A Bloodfly attack has strong reach, with the stinger thrusting in most strikes. For dodging, it’s more effective to move sideways rather than backing up. You can kill them with arrows, but some will close the gap—so keep your melee weapon ready.
Keep moving along the path. As you pass a broken cart, you should notice a small group of Molerats. If they burrow, dodge right when they re-emerge to avoid getting hit. Molerats are often stunned by most attacks and don’t have much health, making them easier than Scavengers or Bloodflies. Still, take your time so you aren’t caught off guard.
Look for Scavengers to your right in the forest alongside the route. Staying on the left side of the path can help you avoid detection. Continue along the trail next to the water, and keep following it as it bends right into the woods. When the road curves, there’s a small Goblin group off the left side. Try to avoid them too, since they’ll all turn hostile if anyone spots you.
The road continues forward with a few side routes marked by signposts. You may draw a Scavenger’s attention near one of these markers. While it’s stronger than a Juvenile, the fight plays out similarly: lure its attacks, then counter when it’s recovering.
Ignore any branching paths and stay on the main road. Eventually it slopes upward and curves to the right, bringing you to the working yard outside a large cave opening. This is the Old Mine. Head inside to locate Ian.
How to Find Ian in the Old Mine
After passing through a short tunnel, you’ll enter an open central shaft. This is where most of the mine activity takes place as the area descends underground. Ian is usually found about halfway down the shaft, inside a worker’s shelter. Start by taking the route to the right, moving past the Digger and the guard.
Pocket Change
As you explore, watch for loose Ore Nuggets on walkways and near ore deposits. You can gather a fair amount of cash while you’re here.
You can’t use the empty elevator shaft, but you can descend the nearby ladder.
Then keep following the path as it drops along the left wall.
When the route opens into a flat walkway, step onto the mesh floor and turn right. Follow the ramp down, behind the guard on the platform nearby.
Continue along the walkway until you reach another elevator shaft that isn’t useful. Descend the nearby ladder again.
Follow the path that leads away from the ladder. After a short downhill stretch, you’ll reach the shelter where you can find Ian.
Once you locate him and speak, make sure you tell him “The Crawlers are mighty hungry.” Doing so confirms you’re working with Diego, and Ian will provide the supply list they need.
The Crawlers Really Are Mighty Hungry!
The side routes near the mine entrance are safe enough to loot, but as you descend deeper, the branching tunnels can house dangerous creatures called Minecrawlers.
A level 4 character reportedly struggled to make noticeable progress on their health bar during an attack, so these enemies are best avoided. If you accidentally provoke a Minecrawler, retreat from the current area and run toward the nearest Guard or Templar. They’re positioned outside most Minecrawler mineshafts and can help mop them up—potentially saving you from losing Nuggets.
Quest-wise, your main task is complete once you receive what you need. You can head back to Diego (or Lares if you want to impress the people at the New Camp) to deliver the supply list and demonstrate your loyalty. Keep in mind that the mine is used for earning Ore Nuggets, so you can also farm money while you’re in the area. Check the guide on how to make Nuggets quickly for more on that.
Report Back to Diego
- In-game objective – “I can bring Diego the list.”
When you’re ready to leave, retrace your steps out of the mine and work your way back to Old Camp. Diego will be at his usual spot just inside the front gate. Hand him the list and the quest finishes.
Completing Test of Faith grants 750 experience and marks a significant step toward joining the Old Camp crew.
Finishing the quest also advances an important target in the Admission to the Old Camp storyline, helping you progress beyond Chapter 1.
