Crimson Desert Guide: Find Skevald at Hyena Den and Claim Putrid Touch Gear

Checklists

  • Location: Hyena Den, east of Tommaso
  • Reward: Putrid Touch Abyss Gear, Hyena Mask

Skevald the Carrion King is a Legendary Animal you can’t track like normal wildlife, and it’s tied to a questline in Crimson Desert that kicks off in the city of Tommaso. In the area just outside town, Skevald nests in a den and commands a large pack of hyenas, prompting the people of Tommaso to post a bounty calling for the creature’s defeat. The goal is to clear the threat so trade routes can reopen.

You don’t have to start the quest “Village in Fear” by searching the message posts around Tommaso. If you’d rather skip straight to the fight, you can run into Skevald at any point while traveling through the open wastes. Just be aware the encounter is brutally difficult, so come in with mid-to-late game equipment and a healthy supply of healing items.

Skevald doesn’t stay locked to a single spot. Instead, it patrols a wide loop that begins at the Hyena Den, heads southeast along the road toward the Desert Ruins, then turns back north and returns toward the den area. The easiest way to spot it is by the big trailing group of hyenas that follow Skevald as it moves.

That large pack is what makes the hunt tricky. If you don’t have tools to quickly thin the herd, you can get overwhelmed before you ever get a clean hit on Skevald. Players may want to lean on Axiom or elemental skills, plus explosive arrows, to remove smaller enemies fast. Weapon arts that can cleave through multiple hyenas at once can also help you keep the pressure manageable.

When you finally face Skevald, expect a fast, heavy hitter loaded with toxic attacks. It frequently releases poison clouds during rushes and pounces, and its lunge is especially dangerous—on top of dealing a lot of damage, it can knock you down and erase a large portion of your health in one go. Since the fight stacks toxic damage on top of the raw hits, you’ll need to stay alert and ready to respond rather than eating damage while you’re recovering.

After you take down one health bar, Skevald will vanish suddenly and the quest objective will update. You’ll have to locate it again, and the game will prompt you to use your lantern to track its movement. Even though the lantern marks the Hyena Den on your map, Skevald won’t actually be waiting there—it will continue along its patrol route. Keep circling until you spot it a second time.

Once Skevald is defeated, the rest of the hyenas around the area will scatter, and you’ll receive new Abyss Gear that lets you apply the same toxic damage that Skevald used against you. After the fight, make sure you go back to Tommaso to finish the quest—doing so nets you the Hyena Helm as well.
