Boruto Reveals How the Mangekyo Sharingan’s New Power Fits the Uchiha Line

One of the most striking powers Masashi Kishimoto introduced in Naruto is the Uchiha Clan’s Mangekyō Sharingan—first appearing in Chapter 142, released October 28, 2002, through Shueisha’s Weekly Shōnen Jump Issue #46. In the broader narrative, this dojutsu isn’t just a flashy upgrade; it’s tightly tied to how multiple Uchihas evolve over time. That connection matters even more in Boruto, especially now that the series has kicked off a new storyline on May 20, 2026.

Mangekyō Sharingan fans have a lot to look forward to in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, too. Mikio Ikemoto and Kishimoto have already breathed new life into the eye by expanding what it can do for characters like Sarada Uchiha. A gravity-themed technique called Ohirume debuted in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 21, and now it looks like another “too strong to ignore” Mangekyō evolution is on the horizon.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Makes Sarada Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan a Big Deal Again

For a long time, the Mangekyō Sharingan sat near the top of the power scale in the Naruto world. But as the story grew and new threats entered the picture, it became harder to treat the eye as an automatic win button. Even though Mangekyō Sharingan users could match Kage-level opponents and even outclass them, the technique struggled against larger, more world-ending forces—like the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki seen during the 4th Great Ninja War, and later against Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, the origin of chakra on Earth.

By that stage of the franchise, the Rinnegan and Rinne Sharingan had effectively eclipsed the Mangekyō Sharingan. That left the eye feeling underused compared to the newer “endgame” dojutsu options.

That’s why Boruto: Two Blue Vortex feels like a course correction for the Mangekyō Sharingan, largely through Sarada Uchiha. Her Mangekyō was officially awakened in Chapter #20 on March 19, 2025, and that moment wasn’t just a milestone—it came with a power boost that goes further than what players have seen from this eye in the Boruto era.

“The restraints are gone? What happened? The Iron Sand is gathering in one spot. No, it’s being sucked in. Those eyes, that’s the Mangekyo Sharingan!” — Mitsuki confirms Sarada’s Black Hole Ability after awakening the Mangekyo Sharingan, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #20

Sarada’s Mangekyō ability, Ohirume, lets her create four black holes while tearing through enemies capable of standing up to threats like the Shinju and Ōtsutsuki. The sheer scale of the gravitational pressure makes it one of the most powerful techniques the series has shown so far in Boruto, and it also makes a clear point: the Mangekyō Sharingan is operating at a much higher level than it did before.

With all of that, Naruto and Sasuke are going to return to Boruto: Two Blue Vortex facing a major challenge.

Why Sarada’s Susanoo Could Become the New “Top Tier” Mangekyō Ability

So far, Sarada has only demonstrated Ohirume using her Mangekyō Sharingan. However, she’s already on the road to going blind—a fact officially confirmed in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #34 on May 20, 2026, in V-Jump Issue #7. Because of that, she needs a way to stabilize or reverse the damage, whether that means awakening the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan or leaning on medical techniques designed to prevent further deterioration. Either way, Sarada still has to solve the puzzle of how to unlock additional overpowered Mangekyō techniques.

“As I thought, the prescription doesn’t seem right. Your eyesight has clearly worsened compared to before. It’s a risk that inevitably follows the Mangekyō Sharingan. The more you use it, the more your eyesight deteriorates… It depends on the nature of the technique and how it’s used… but in any case, if you keep using it like this, eventually, you’ll go completely blind.” — Sakura Haruno confirms Sarada is slowly going blind, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #34

Each Mangekyō Sharingan typically grants two abilities, but Sarada has only revealed one so far—leaving the second slot as a major mystery. More importantly for what comes next, Sarada’s Mangekyō is also connected to Susanoo, widely regarded as the eye’s strongest expression. That connection is officially confirmed in Naruto Chapter #464. Susanoo becomes available to those who awaken the Mangekyō in both eyes, and since Sarada meets the requirement, she should have access to a Susanoo form she hasn’t used yet.

“Only those who have awakened the double Mangekyō can use this power. The Third power…Susanoo!” — Sasuke Uchiha explains the criteria for using the Susanoo, Naruto Chapter #464

In most cases, Susanoo is closely linked to the Mangekyō’s underlying abilities. For example, Sasuke can combine the Susanoo with Amaterasu and Kagutsuchi. Kakashi Hatake can pair his Susanoo with Kamui. Likewise, Sarada’s black hole manipulation could be incorporated into her own Susanoo as well. If that happens, a black-hole Susanoo would be among the most formidable tools Boruto: Two Blue Vortex has introduced—and players will likely be waiting for the exact moment she unleashes it.

It also helps that the current Boruto: Two Blue Vortex storyline has put Sarada at the center of the action. The arc officially began on May 20, then continued through V-Jump Issue #8 on June 18, 2026, and it has already set up serious developments for her. With Sarada expected to be abducted and taken directly to the Shinju, the stage is set for a large-scale conflict—and it’s entirely possible that this is where Sarada taps into the next phase of her Mangekyō arsenal.

The Mangekyō Sharingan Could Get Even Stronger in the Boruto Era

Seeing the Mangekyō Sharingan receive additional overpowered abilities makes it clear the eye is set to matter more than ever in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Sarada isn’t just getting one new trick—she’s collecting upgrades one after another. And it isn’t only her: Sasuke Uchiha had his Rinnegan taken away in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter #53 on December 20, 2020, leaving him with only the Mangekyō Sharingan as his main power source.

That makes it especially interesting that, when Sasuke returns near the end of the new Boruto: Two Blue Vortex arc, it’s likely he’ll have a strengthened Mangekyō and possibly even entirely new jutsu—exactly the kind of long-awaited payoff fans have been waiting years for. If that boost materializes, Sasuke could become extremely overpowered again.

“During their training together to get stronger, Boruto and Sasuke’s main food sources were fish and wild birds, which they hunted using Raiton and Shuriken, along with wild plants and mushrooms.” — Mikio Ikemoto confirms Sasuke is stronger after Boruto timeskip, Boruto Volume #8

In fact, in Boruto Volume #8—which released officially on June 4, 2026—Mikio Ikemoto and Masashi Kishimoto reiterated that Sasuke pushed himself even further during the timeskip. Since the Mangekyō Sharingan is his main source of strength, it stands to reason that his command over the eye improved again, and that he may have uncovered new abilities fans will finally see when he returns at the end of the new arc.
