God of War Laufey Gets Confirmed Physical Disc, Points to 2027 Release
Santa Monica Studio has confirmed that God of War Laufey will be sold with a physical disc, a detail that strongly suggests the game’s launch is being planned to land sometime in 2027.
The PlayStation developer shared the update through a post on its X (formerly Twitter) account. In the same message thread, the studio responded to fans who were worried the title might go all-digital. Those fears were prompted by the fact that the team had previously said it would be at San Diego Comic-Con 2026 to discuss God of War Laufey, and the reply reassured players that they don’t need to worry about losing the option to own a disc copy.
“We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc,” Santa Monica Studio said.

The one-line announcement has already become a talking point for two separate reasons. First, it indicates that the Deborah Ann Woll-starring entry will be purchasable on a disc after Sony’s decision to stop producing new physical PlayStation games starting in January 2028. That policy has left many players frustrated, but at least for this specific PlayStation exclusive, the release won’t be confined to a digital-only format.
A second wave of concern had been building because God of War Laufey still hasn’t received a specific release date or even a confirmed window. At the same time, Rockstar Games has recently framed Grand Theft Auto 6 physical releases as “a code in a box,” adding to the anxiety that modern disc versions may not always match what collectors expect. With PlayStation disc production for new titles set to end in January 2028, the new confirmation from Santa Monica Studio makes it look increasingly likely that the developers are aiming for a release before the end of 2027.
God of War Laufey was revealed during Sony’s June 2026 State of Play presentation. This story is described as a non-prequel, following Faye/Laufey on a journey through the afterlife. The reveal included plenty of gameplay and narrative moments, designed to keep players engaged until launch. Given how much has already been shown—and with ongoing speculation that Santa Monica Studio is targeting a February or March 2027 release—it’s easier to understand why the studio feels confident enough to confirm physical availability now.
For the moment, though, God of War Laufey still doesn’t have a firm launch date. In the meantime, players can look for an exclusive team interview, and they can also hear Woll’s recollection of when she was first told about the project back in 2018.
