Demon King Tanjiro: why the final movie could outshine Muzan
Koyoharu Gotouge’s Demon Slayer is a shonen series that began in Weekly Shonen Jump with its debut in Issue #11 on February 15, 2016. From the early run, the franchise established Muzan Kibutsuji as the story’s ultimate antagonist—an extremely powerful demon responsible for the massacre of Tanjiro’s family while Tanjiro was away. Muzan didn’t fully step into the spotlight until chapter 13, released on May 16, 2016 in WSJ Issue #24, and he quickly became a central presence as the Demon King and the source of all demons.
Even with Muzan’s overwhelming strength, the Demon Slayer Corps pressed forward. That determination feeds directly into the Infinity Castle invasion that ends Season 4 and leads into Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle in 2025. A surprise explosion temporarily weakens Muzan, but his plan is to recover nearly to full strength for the last fight in his final form. He also faces a major complication: the Anti-Muzan drug he was infected with leaves his regeneration worse than it would be otherwise. Ultimately, Muzan is defeated by the end of the series. He is held off until sunrise and dies in Demon Slayer chapter 200, published in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #18 on March 30, 2020.
“My body will soon give in to the sunlight… but my memories are eternal and unbreakable. I’ll pass them on to this boy. My breathing and my heart are failing, but not every cell has been destroyed. There’s still time. I’ll pour all my blood and strength into him—so I don’t lose to death. With you, Kamado Tanjiro, I will conquer the Sun. I’ll become the strongest Demon King. Your blood makes you the same as Kamado Nezuko. You can use monstrous breathing techniques—you’re special. Don’t die. I believe that with you, I’ll achieve every dream of mine. Destroy the Demon Slayers for me.” — Muzan to Tanjiro, Demon Slayer chapter 201
With Muzan’s death, the series offers real relief—though it doesn’t last. Right after his end, the narrative sets up an even more shocking development in chapter 201: a stronger enemy is effectively about to be born. That chapter reveals Tanjiro was given all of Muzan’s blood, kicking off the final stage of his transformation. Muzan’s intention was clear—Tanjiro would become the ultimate demon, surpassing even him in raw power. The change shows up immediately: Tanjiro’s eyes turn demonic, and he gains regenerative abilities alongside a Muzan-like appearance.
As the next Demon King, Tanjiro’s capabilities eclipse everything the series previously showed. Like Nezuko, he develops resistance to the sun, which had been Muzan’s only dependable weakness the Corps exploited to kill him. On top of that, Demon King Tanjiro can use Sun Breathing, positioning him as the apex threat. As an antagonist, he’s portrayed as essentially unbeatable—no matter which Breathing Styles are used against him, he can’t be killed. The implication goes even further: Tanjiro is said to be far stronger than Muzan, and could also have surpassed Yoriichi, putting him at the very top of the series’ power ladder.
Solo Leveling has also announced its next big movie for 2027, and the buzz is that it might challenge Infinity Castle for the title of the biggest anime film ever.
How Tanjiro’s ultimate transformation didn’t stick
Demon King Tanjiro’s transformation is framed as a disaster the characters were trying to stop before it fully took hold. At that point in the story, the Demon Slayer Corps are stretched to the limit, with most of the Hashira already gone. Still, they keep fighting, pushing toward Tanjiro in an effort to prevent the worst outcome. Fortunately, the transformation doesn’t complete successfully, thanks to several key interventions.
In Demon Slayer chapter 202, Nezuko returns after a long absence from the final arcs. She immediately rushes in to hug Tanjiro and stop him. Even though her involvement doesn’t completely shut down his demonic state, the distraction creates an opening. With Nezuko drawing attention, Kanao Tsuyuri uses the final technique of Flower Breathing, Equinoctial Vermilion Eye, to sharpen her perception and inject Tanjiro with a vial of Anti-Demon antidote. That antidote was created by both Shinobu and Lady Tamayo before their deaths. Kanao ends up going fully blind, but her sacrifice helps turn the tide.
“I guess this is why I still have one eye left. Right, Shinobu? He only turned into a demon a few moments ago. So right now, even with one eye, I can squeeze in one attack on Tanjiro. Flower Breathing Final Form: Equinoctial Vermilion Eye.” — Kanao in Demon Slayer Chapter 202
After that moment, the antidote begins to take effect. Even though Muzan attempts to persuade Tanjiro into completing the transformation, it ultimately fails in Demon Slayer chapter 203, dated April 27, 2020. That chapter marks Tanjiro being restored—he’s freed from the transformation and wakes up as a human once again. The narrative frames it as the worst-case scenario being prevented thanks to everyone involved.

Tanjiro’s arrival can only happen after the Muzan conflict is finished, which is set to conclude in the final entry of the trilogy—tentatively titled Infinity Castle Part 3. Demon King Tanjiro is expected to show up late in that film as a major twist. There’s currently no confirmed release date for Infinity Castle Part 2, and no confirmed date for Part 3 either, but the expectation is that Part 2 releases in 2027 and Part 3 follows in 2029.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 will be available to stream on Crunchyroll starting July 28, 2026.
