Sekiro: No Defeat Anime Trailer, Release Date Guide (PS5)

Kadokawa has released the third official trailer for Sekiro: No Defeat, an anime adaptation based on the acclaimed 2019 action game from FromSoftware. The series is scheduled to debut in Japan on September 4, where it will run in theaters for three weeks. After that, the adaptation is expected to reach US viewers at a later date, though the exact day has not been announced yet, via the streaming service Crunchyroll.

Release plans and production details

Sekiro: No Defeat was first revealed during Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2025. The anime is being produced by studio Qzil.la, with Kenichi Kutsuna—credited as a key animator on titles such as Bleach, One Punch Man, and Naruto: Shippuden—set to direct.

While detailed plot information is still under wraps, the adaptation appears to track the broad storyline of the original FromSoftware game. The focus is on Kuro, identified as the Divine Heir, and his steadfast shinobi protector, Wolf.

How it compares to other big action anime-game projects

Visually, Sekiro: No Defeat looks close to FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. However, it’s also said to share more thematic and stylistic similarities with Black Myth: Wukong than with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

What the third trailer shows

The newest trailer runs for about one minute, but it’s packed with story hints and action-heavy set pieces. The opening portion of the trailer emphasizes the bond between Kuro and Wolf, presenting their lord-and-protector relationship through a range of shots, including one where Kuro appears to be laughing beside the stern-faced shinobi.

In a longer sequence, Kuro tries to take the Mortal Blade from Wolf’s back, but the attempt fails—Wolf is portrayed as too strong for Kuro to overpower.

Action montage and boss fight callouts

The second half shifts into a fast montage of battle moments. It includes both of the boss fights against Genichiro Ashina, with the pupil of Tomoe using the same lightning-style attacks seen in the 2019 Game of the Year winner.

The trailer also briefly features the iconic horse-riding boss Gyoubu Oniwa. That appearance is intercut with shots showing a brutal, bloody beheading, as well as a quick moment where Wolf parries melee strikes from a Senpou Temple monk.

A short glimpse also suggests Genichiro is fighting Emma. The trailer concludes on a calmer note, showing Wolf and Kuro standing together and looking out over a rippling ocean at sunset.

Tone shift in the new teaser and what it might mean

Overall, the third Sekiro: No Defeat trailer lands a bit lighter than the one released in March. The March trailer leaned into harsher imagery and teased psychological horror-like elements, while the latest trailer puts more emphasis on the brighter moments between Kuro and Wolf alongside a greater share of action set pieces.

Even with that shift, the newest teaser still carries an undercurrent of unease. It also suggests that the adaptation won’t just include the game’s darker themes—it may highlight them more directly than the original game does.
