EA Sports FC Renames FC Pro World Championship Trophy for Diogo Jota
EA Sports FC has revealed that the FC Pro World Championship Trophy is getting a new name to honor Diogo Jota. Going forward, the award will be called the FC Pro World Championship Trophy: Diogo Jota.
Quick facts
- EA Sports FC announced the FC Pro World Championship Trophy will be renamed for Diogo Jota.
- The new title recognizes Jota’s connection to EA Sports FC and his passion for esports.
- Jota and his brother André Silva died in a car accident in Spain last year.
- EA says it will keep working with Jota’s family to find additional meaningful ways to honor his legacy.
- The renamed trophy will be lifted for the first time at this summer’s FC Pro World Championship.
- The event runs from July 22 to July 26.
EA framed the change as a tribute to the Liverpool and Portugal forward/winger, who passed away last year. Jota died alongside his brother, André Silva, in a car accident in Spain.
In the announcement, EA Sports FC said it was honoring Jota’s legacy by naming the trophy after him. The company also noted that the renaming is backed by Jota’s family, and that the decision reflects his love for EA SPORTS FC as well as his drive and involvement in esports.
EA Sports FC added that it will continue collaborating with Jota’s relatives to identify further ways to remember him. The message emphasizes that the tribute isn’t only about football, but also about the esports side of his life.
A footballer who kept one foot in esports
The tribute highlights an aspect of Jota that many football fans may not have known. He was described as a true esports enthusiast and ran a team called LUNA Esports.
LUNA Esports competed in EA FC esports events spanning 2020 through 2025. EA also tied the timing to his passing, stating it occurred a year before this year’s anniversary date—July 3, 2025.
The FC Pro World Championship trophy will be raised for the first time this summer. For the esports community, EA is positioning the moment as a dedicated chance to recognize Jota’s memory.
Jota was 28 when he died, and EA’s statement also recalls his importance at Liverpool over recent seasons. He was also recognized as a key part of the Portuguese national team setup.
After his death, tributes reportedly came from across football and esports, reflecting how widely he was admired as both a player and a person. EA notes that Jota was recently honored by being included on a Portuguese national team squad list—the same squad he would have been part of if not for the accident.
The FC Pro event itself is scheduled to begin on July 22 and run through July 26. Full team lineups have not been confirmed yet, but EA says the competition will include players and organizations such as Manchester City esports, PSV Eindhoven, and AS Monaco, along with traditional esports names including Ninjas in Pyjamas, Team Liquid, and others.
