Cyberpunk 2077 Hits 40 Million Sales, Entering the Top 20 Best-Sellers

With Cyberpunk 2077 nearing its sixth anniversary, CD Projekt Red has shared a fresh sales milestone: the game has reached 40 million copies sold. Given how turbulent the launch was, it’s a number that likely surprised even the people who built Night City.

Cyberpunk Passes 40 Million Copies Sold

On social media, the Cyberpunk development team summed it up with a simple message: “Night City population: 40 million dreamers,” followed by “Thank you all for helping us reach this amazing milestone!”

CDPR’s update specifies that the 40 million total includes copies of the base game and its Ultimate Edition. That Ultimate Edition bundles the base release with the Phantom Liberty DLC. What the total does not include is expansion copies sold separately.

Reaching 40 million on its own is a major feat, but it also places Cyberpunk 2077 among the biggest sellers in video game history. The game’s current tally puts it in the top 20 best-selling games ever, alongside Payday 2, Hogwarts Legacy, and the original Sonic the Hedgehog.

This is also the first time CDPR has revised Cyberpunk’s sales figure since it reached 35 million. The jump of five million copies has now helped Cyberpunk move above several high-profile sellers—especially within Nintendo’s lineup.

Among the Nintendo releases now left behind by Cyberpunk are Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The latter two have continued selling steadily, meaning they could still climb back above Cyberpunk over time. For now, though, the update reinforces that Cyberpunk’s sales momentum isn’t fading.

What Would It Take to Climb Even Higher

CDPR’s latest numbers suggest Cyberpunk could keep improving its position. If it sells another three million copies, it would leapfrog two of the best-selling Call of Duty entries: Black Ops 3 and 2019’s Modern Warfare.

Going further, if Cyberpunk manages to add ten more million sales, it would land at the same level as the original Overwatch. At that point, it would also have sold more than Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow—another potential headache for Nintendo fans who keep watching their favorites get nudged down the list.

Why Cyberpunk Probably Won’t Beat The Witcher 3

Even with continued growth, it’s unlikely Cyberpunk 2077 will ever overtake CD Projekt Red’s top-selling title. That distinction currently belongs to The Witcher 3, and CDPR indicates it’s not going anywhere.

One reason is longevity: The Witcher 3 has stayed a strong seller more than 11 years after its original release. On top of that, CD Projekt Red has now confirmed another major expansion is on the way, which should further increase sales for the latest Witcher entry.
