Netflix Reportedly Developing a Live-Action Persona TV Series

A live-action adaptation of Persona is reportedly being developed for Netflix. The streaming service has started work on a TV series based on Sega and Atlus’ long-running, critically praised RPG franchise, with plans still in the early stages and details remaining scarce.

Netflix begins work on a live-action Persona series

Netflix is moving forward with a series adaptation of Persona, a franchise that has built a devoted audience through its mix of supernatural school life, turn-based combat, and character-driven storytelling. Variety reports that Star Trek: Picard and 9-1-1 alumnus Christopher Monfette is attached as the writer, while also taking on executive producer and showrunner responsibilities.

Additional production support comes from 21 Laps co-founders Shawn Levy and Robert Atwood, who are also set to executive produce. The project additionally lists Dmitri M. Johnson, Michael Lawrence Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson from Story Kitchen as executive producers, with Sega producer Toru Nakahara also expected to help in an executive capacity.

Netflix did not provide comment in response to a request for feedback.

What the show could cover—and what’s still unknown

At this point, it’s not clear whether the series will adapt a specific Persona game’s plot directly or instead craft an original story drawn from the franchise’s broader themes. Since the franchise began in 1996, multiple mainline entries, a large library of spin-offs, and even a handful of remakes have given the adaptation a wide range of source material to reference.

The most recent numbered installment, Persona 5, introduced players to the Phantom Thieves when it launched in 2016. The story then expanded further with Persona 5 Royal in 2024.

  • The series’ narrative approach is unconfirmed: it may adapt a particular entry or chart an entirely new storyline.
  • The franchise timeline spans from its 1996 debut, with mainline games, numerous spin-offs, and several remakes offering potential material.
  • Persona 5 arrived in 2016 and introduced the Phantom Thieves.
  • Persona 5 Royal expanded that story in 2024.

Even without confirmed story specifics, fans are likely to begin theorizing immediately about which characters, locations, and concepts could appear in the live-action format. Because production is still early, there’s currently no announced release window or casting lineup.

Production team and Netflix’s track record with game and genre projects

Netflix’s involvement with 21 Laps is perhaps the most notable connection here. The companies previously teamed up on the sci-fi blockbuster Stranger Things, which concluded toward the end of last year. Netflix has also been connected to other TV titles such as The Perfect Couple and Last Man Standing.

On the film side, Netflix credits include Deadpool & Wolverine—a project directed by Shawn Levy—and a movie titled Backrooms. Additional future work is also on the horizon, including Star Wars: Starfighter, which Levy is also set to direct.

  • Stranger Things is a major Netflix collaboration with 21 Laps, and it wrapped late last year.
  • Netflix has also participated in series production including The Perfect Couple and Last Man Standing.
  • Levy directed Deadpool & Wolverine, which is listed among Netflix’s movie credits.
  • Netflix is also credited with Backrooms.
  • Star Wars: Starfighter is among the future projects mentioned, with Levy directing.

Story Kitchen’s past video game adaptations

Story Kitchen has pursued several video game adaptation efforts over time. The company is most closely associated with the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise, built in partnership with Sega. Looking ahead, its slate has included plans for projects based on Sifu, It Takes Two, Just Cause, Life is Strange, and more.

What to watch for next while Persona TV waits

With the Persona live-action series still early in development, it may take a while before the project reaches a more concrete stage. While waiting for updates, fans can also track Netflix’s ongoing efforts to bring its Gears of War movie to life.

On the Persona front, players can also look back at recent announcements and follow-ups. Netflix viewers may be interested in catching up on Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6, which was revealed after years of anticipation during the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month.
