Well Dweller Launch Date Set for Sept. 22 on PS5, Xbox, Switch, and PC
Top Hat Studios and developer Kyle Thompson have announced that the metroidvania Well Dweller will launch on September 22 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on the day it releases, with the PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2 versions revealed on September 24.
A fairy-tale metroidvania coming to new platforms
Well Dweller is described as a dark fairy-tale metroidvania crafted by the creators of Crypt Custodian and Islets. The story centers on the depths of a forest, where a single brave creature lives at the bottom of a well—one capable of killing the queen. Players take on the role of Glimmer, a small bird equipped with a match that must burn down the evil queen to save their family.
Gameplay focuses on exploring a ruined kingdom, meeting charming characters, and pushing deeper through hazards and terrifying beasts. Progress is tied to uncovering secrets, solving puzzles, and earning new abilities that expand the map as you work toward the queen’s quarters.
Glimmer’s companions, bosses, and match-powered combat
In the game’s decaying ruins, players will encounter a cast attempting to survive alongside Glimmer. The announcement specifically highlights Aldo, a mouse on the run from the queen’s grasp, and Lalau, a mysterious scavenger who searches the realm for the best goods to steal. The journey also includes finding and reuniting Glimmer’s protected brothers, who were reportedly kidnapped one night by a deranged hunter.
Combat is supported by Glimmer’s match, which can be lit to illuminate the world and help in fights. Players can collect “berloques” to strengthen abilities and combine them to customize how they play. With puzzles, harsh bosses, and a path through the kingdom’s ruined areas, the objective remains the same: make it to the queen and save the family.
