UNC: Missing Survey Team Guide—How to Reach Antaeus and Recover Loot

If you’re working through UNC: Missing Survey Team in Mass Effect, this mission guide breaks down exactly how to reach Antaeus, locate the missing researchers, survive the fight at the excavation area, and mop up the loot before you head back to the Normandy. It also notes which companion Assignment threads you can advance once you return to the ship.

Release & availability overview

UNC: Missing Survey Team is an in-mission assignment found during the Mass Effect main quest flow. The walkthrough below is written for the gameplay structure used across the series’ editions, with special attention to the fact that certain threats—like the Thresher Maw encounter—can be especially punishing in the Legendary Edition.

Travel to Antaeus

  • Destination: Hades Gamma – Antaeus – Trebin

UNC: Missing Survey Team can be obtained in three different ways. The most frequent option is overhearing a report about it in the Citadel elevators. Less commonly, you can find it on Noveria right before that planet’s boss fight at the end. Either way, both approaches are optional—landing on Trebin directly is enough to get the Assignment.

To reach it, travel to Hades Gamma, specifically the area east of Gemini Sigma and south-east of Attican Beta (where Feros sits). From there, move into the Antaeus system, located in the southern part of Hades Gamma. While you’re there, pick up these Discoveries:

Once you’re ready, land on Trebin, the fourth planet in the system.

Recommended Loadout

  • Squad Tactics:
    • Any squad member can work, but teammates comfortable with mid-range assault rifles—such as Garrus and Ashley / Wrex—are highlighted as preferable.
  • Shepard’s Loadout:
    • Because the Assignment largely features organic enemies, use Anti-Personnel / Shredder Rounds for this stretch.

Find Missing Researchers

When you land on Trebin, bring up your map and search for the Research Base marker.

If you decide to explore, watch out for the Thresher Maw. This encounter can be a strong source of XP, but the fight is tough—especially if you’re playing Legendary Edition.

During the Thresher Maw fight, remain in the Mako. Keep moving, and use your weapons—guns and rockets—whenever you have a clear shot. If things start going sideways, you can simply drive away and return after your shields recharge, then attempt the fight again.

After you reach the Research Base, park the Mako between the three buildings and exit. To continue the Assignment, enter the Northern building and open the Computer Console on the desk directly in front of you. Then sweep the nearby area for loot.

  • Storage Locker – Easy Decryption. In the Northern building, in the corner to the right of the Computer Console.
  • Malfunctioning Object – In the Southern building, directly in front of you when going through the door.
  • Medical Kit – In the Western building, on the shelf directly in front of you when going through the door.

Once you’ve cleared out everything there, head straight north from the Research Base to reach the Excavation Site. Go inside with your guns ready.

Explore Excavation Site

Inside the excavation area, go down the sloped tunnel, then cut left into the main chamber. Draw your weapons immediately—this is where you’ll get hit by a large wave of Husks.

These enemies aren’t individually complicated, but the sheer number can overwhelm your squad. Keep your distance, and stay mobile so their fire gets split across multiple angles as you reposition.

The large chamber is littered with explosives during the first assault. Use them when you can, but don’t lose focus on the immediate danger in front of you. If the Husks close the gap, their special electrical explosion attacks can end the fight quickly.

The opening wave isn’t the only threat. The north-east corner of the site has two passageways, and both contain more Husks waiting for you. You can draw them out by firing near the doors to the passageways, triggering nearby explosives, and using similar tactics to force them into the open.

When the enemies are down, the Assignment completes automatically—because the Husks you defeated were the excavation team you were sent to find. Still, take time to search the rest of the area for crates and other containers holding inventory-worthy goods.

  • Locked Crate – Easy Decryption. Among the crates near the entrance to the main chamber, facing toward the center of the area.
  • Locked Crate – Easy Decryption. Behind the boxes along the Southern wall, close to where a box meets the wall.
  • Crate – Located on the opposite side of the boxes where the second Locked Crate was.
  • Sludge Canister – In the Northern sub-room of the mines.
  • Secure Crate – Average Decryption. In the Eastern sub-room of the mines.

After you’ve gathered everything, leave the Excavation Site and return to the Mako. From there, you can either keep exploring around Trebin or make your way back to the Normandy.

Back on the Normandy

If you’re following the walkthrough step-by-step and keeping up with conversations with Garrus, Wrex, and Tali, this is the point where you can unlock their companion Assignments. Speaking to Garrus unlocks “Garrus: Find Dr. Saleon”. Speaking to Wrex and then bringing up “Family” unlocks “Wrex: Family Armor”. Both are slated to be covered later in the Uncharted Worlds Roadmap.

Tali is different: you don’t unlock her Assignment while you’re on the Normandy in this moment. However, talking to her and then asking about “Tali’s father” under Investigate provides the story context. You’ll get the full unlock later by completing “UNC: Geth Incursions”.
