Rumor: GTA 6 Could Borrow GTA 5’s Character Switching System

With the release day of GTA 6 finally approaching, it’s worth remembering just how long it’s been since GTA 5 first landed back in 2014—roughly 12 years between the two. Given how much game technology has advanced in that span, it’s hard not to be impressed by the quality and realism shown in GTA 6’s trailers, especially when you compare that presentation to what the previous entry delivered.

Still, one gameplay concept might be making the leap forward as well. A recent listing for the game suggests GTA 6 could retain the same character switching approach that defined GTA 5, but this time centered on Jason and Lucia.

GTA 6 may still use the old character swapping system

If you ever booted up GTA 5, you likely remember how smooth it felt to move between Michael, Trevor, and Franklin as they carried on with their everyday routines. It had that “how did I end up here?” magic—like waking Trevor after an all-night binge near a dumpster, or cutting in on Michael while he casually cruises around Los Santos.

Now, it appears GTA 6 could offer a similar experience, letting players swap between Jason and Lucia regardless of where they are in the open world.

The logic here is fairly straightforward: the Brazilian Amazon listing for GTA 6 claims you’ll be able to “switch between Jason and Lucia during the story,” while also taking part “in missions as a duo.” Taken together, that points toward a structure where the characters aren’t just tied to separate quests, but can be actively alternated throughout the campaign—and still paired up when the game wants you to tackle objectives together.

Of course, no one has hands-on confirmation yet, so there’s a degree of interpretation in how those details might play out in practice. But it’s a reasonable assumption given that GTA 5 already had the underlying framework for character transitions. With the series now operating at a much higher technical level, it also seems plausible that these swaps won’t rely on the same kind of map zoom-outs and hidden loading moments that players may associate with older transitions.

And while there’s no expectation you’ll recreate anything like Trevor’s specific brand of chaos with Jason or Lucia, the option to bounce between two protagonists still leaves room for plenty of awkward, funny, or unexpected situations—especially in a game world as freewheeling as GTA.
