Mass Effect 3 Guide: How to Save Tali and Secure the Rannoch Ceasefire
If you’re aiming to save Tali and broker a ceasefire between the Quarians and the geth in Mass Effect 3, this is the part of the game where preparation matters most. The key moment arrives during the final Rannoch mission, where your choices can determine whether both sides live—or whether the war ends with one of them annihilated.
Checklists
This section of a Mass Effect 3 wiki guide focuses on the steps needed to secure a successful ceasefire and keep Tali alive. It also lays out what you must do to unlock the persuasion dialogue options that make the “impossible” outcome possible.
SPOILER WARING

Prelude
The scenario unfolds during the climactic mission dealing with the Quarians and the geth: Priority: Rannoch. After the Reapers are defeated, the geth are no longer under Reaper control, and the Quarian fleet turns its weapons fully toward geth ships.
Legion—if it survived from Mass Effect 2—or the geth VI if Legion is gone, wants to upload Reaper code into the geth collective. The reason is straightforward: it grants them “true intelligence.” Tali (or Shala’Raan, if Tali died during Mass Effect 2) pushes back hard, arguing that since the Quarians are already attacking, uploading that code will trigger a geth retaliation that wipes the Quarians out completely.
At first, you’re presented with a choice between “Upload the code” and “We’re letting the geth die.” Like the Virmire decision, this is described as a false branching point—your real outcome is determined immediately by what happens next.
Once Legion or the geth VI begins uploading the Reaper code and Tali or Shala’Raan’s attempts to stop the attack fail, you gain up to four options. Each option leads to dramatically different consequences. The guide then breaks down the outcomes and explains how to unlock the persuasion-based choices.
- Allow the Upload
- Let the Geth Die
- Persuasion: Rally the Fleet / Warn the Fleet
What happened: the main choice outcomes
-
Allow the Upload: Legion (or the geth VI) proceeds with uploading the Reaper Code. The upload requires self-sacrifice; Legion or the geth VI gives themselves up to complete it, and the geth fleets gain full sentience. Their fighters then overwhelm the Quarian fleet and destroy them all.
Your Quarian companion witnesses the result on the ground. If your companion is Tali, she removes her mask and commits suicide by falling off the cliff. A Paragon interrupt appears to try to save her, but it fails. If your companion is Shala’Raan, she shoots herself in the head.
-
Let the Geth Die: Legion (or the geth VI) turns hostile and attacks Shepard. The Quarians disable them, and the guide notes this is the only time in the trilogy Tali uses her boot knife. You then get three Renegade interrupts to finish Legion (or the geth VI), but they still die from Tali’s strike regardless.
After Legion or the geth VI is dead, the Quarians continue their assault and destroy the geth fleet. Tali or Shala’Raan survives, and the Quarians become War Assets for your side.
-
Persuasion: Rally the Fleet / Warn the Fleet: If you’ve prepared correctly, you can unlock a Charm option labeled “Rally the fleet” and an Intimidate option labeled “Warn the fleet.” These are described as among the hardest-earned options in the game. Shepard makes a direct plea to the Quarians to call a ceasefire so both groups can survive.
However, there are two separate checks determining whether your plea works.
Persuasion: Rally the Fleet / Warn the Fleet
These persuasion options only appear if you meet strict conditions. Even when you can select them, you still must pass a second requirement based on points earned from earlier actions. The guide details both checks below.
Step 1: Persuasion Check
The first check determines whether you can even choose the “Rally the fleet” or “Warn the fleet” options at all. You must satisfy all four requirements, or you won’t be able to select either persuasion option. Instead, you’ll have to choose between the Quarians or the geth using the dialogue options on the right side of the dialogue wheel.
- At least 80% of the Reputation bar must be filled.
- Tali must have survived the Suicide Mission in Mass Effect 2 so she is present in Mass Effect 3.
- Legion must have been activated in Mass Effect 2 and survived the Suicide Mission so it is present in Mass Effect 3. The geth VI does not count.
- The mission Rannoch: Geth Fighter Squadrons must be completed.
Step 2: Plea Check
Even if you can attempt the ceasefire plea, there’s still a second check that decides whether your argument succeeds. Earlier choices build Shepard’s credibility with the Quarians, enabling the plea to land.
Each qualifying action grants points. You must reach five points to pass. The listed point sources are:
- Mass Effect 2 actions
- +2 Points for not presenting the evidence against Tali’s father during Tali: Treason in Mass Effect 2.
- +2 Points for destroying the heretic geth in Legion: A House Divided in Mass Effect 2, weakening the geth fleet.
- +1 Point for using a Persuasion option to settle the disagreement between Tali and Legion after the Loyalty mission in Mass Effect 2.
- Mass Effect 3 actions
- +1 Point for completing Rannoch: Admiral Koris, demonstrating loyalty to the Migrant Fleet.
- +1 Point for saving Admiral Koris during Rannoch: Admiral Koris, where he will support Shepard’s plea.
- +2 Points for not presenting the evidence against Tali’s father during Tali: Treason in Mass Effect 2.
- +2 Points for destroying the heretic geth in Legion: A House Divided in Mass Effect 2, weakening the geth fleet.
- +1 Point for using a Persuasion option to resolve the post-Loyalty argument between Tali and Legion in Mass Effect 2.
- +1 Point for completing Rannoch: Admiral Koris, proving your loyalty to the Migrant Fleet.
- +1 Point for saving Admiral Koris in Rannoch: Admiral Koris, where he backs Shepard’s plea.
If you end up with fewer than 5 points, the plea fails, and the guide points you back to the outcomes described under the Allow the Upload section.
If you do have 5 points or more, the plea succeeds. In that case, both the geth and the Quarians survive, and Tali and/or Shala’Raan survive as well. Legion still dies, sacrificing itself to spread the Reaper code throughout the geth. Overall, the guide frames it as ending a war that has lasted 300 years, while securing both sides for your cause.
Persuasion: Genesis 2
If you started Mass Effect 3 and want to use this ceasefire route, the guide says you’ll need to begin with the Genesis 2 DLC comic and make very specific selections. Those choices are what grant enough points to stand a chance of passing both checks above.
-
When deciding how many squadmates to bring, choose “Take your time. Recruit all”. This ensures both Tali and Legion join your squad, survive the Suicide Mission, and help you satisfy the Persuasion Check on Rannoch.
-
When dealing with their conflict, pick “Resolve the conflicts”. This has two effects:
- In Tali’s Loyalty mission, Tali is cleared of treason without using the evidence against her father, granting +2 points for the Plea Check.
- In Legion’s Loyalty mission, the geth Heretics are destroyed, granting +2 points for the Plea Check.
-
When deciding whether to go through the Omega-4 Relay right after the Normandy crew is taken, choose “Prepare ship and team”. The guide notes this costs half of the Normandy crew, but it also ensures Legion survives into Mass Effect 3, which supports passing the Persuasion Check.
- In Tali’s Loyalty mission, Tali is cleared of treason without using the evidence against her father, granting +2 points for the Plea Check.
- In Legion’s Loyalty mission, the geth Heretics are destroyed, granting +2 points for the Plea Check.
After handling Genesis 2 properly, the remaining work is to meet the Persuasion Check conditions: fill the Reputation bar to 80% and complete Rannoch: Geth Fighter Squadrons. Then complete Rannoch: Admiral Koris to earn the additional +1 point needed to clear the Plea Check.
