Halo Destiny-Like MMOFPS Reportedly in Development at Xbox, Leaks Claim

As Destiny 2 nears the end of its support cycle, fresh leaks and rumors have started pointing to a new Halo MMOFPS project in development at Xbox—one that would play in the same space as Bungie’s long-running looter shooter. The chatter is also being backed up by several well-known leakers. At the same time, the broader rumor mill suggests the Halo franchise has multiple internal efforts underway, ranging from additional remakes to a new mainline installment, plus the still-mysterious “Project Ekur.”

In the years after Halo Infinite launched, Halo Studios has reportedly been searching for the franchise’s next direction. Fans already know one major step: Halo: Combat Evolved is being remade for a new generation. There have also been claims that the rest of the original trilogy could be remade afterward. Still, other leaks—about an attempt to branch into battle royale—along with rumors of an unknown multiplayer-focused effort called Project Ekur, have left many players wondering what comes next. With Bungie shutting down Destiny 2, some fans also see a potential opening for Halo to step into that MMO shooter spotlight.

One of the most recognizable visual signatures from Halo campaign games is now sparking its own debate: whether Halo Studios has handled that iconic motif properly in the latest iteration.

Halo’s Next Big Project Could Be a Destiny-Style MMOFPS, If This Leak Is Accurate

Two separate leakers are claiming that a Halo MMOFPS—designed in the spirit of Destiny—is currently in production at Microsoft.

  1. A rumor traces back to a post on June 13, 2026, by a Reddit user named HTD_Blog. That post claims that Obsidian Entertainment pitched a Halo MMO project to Microsoft about two years earlier, and that it received approval from Phil Spencer.
  2. The same HTD_Blog post reportedly adds that Obsidian will not be the developer. Instead, development would supposedly be handled by a group referred to as “Team X.”
  3. In follow-up commentary, the notable leaker TechnicalHalo says they can confirm the existence of the Halo MMOFPS, and that details they’ve heard match the original HTD_Blog leak.
  4. TechnicalHalo also claims the game has gone through multiple prototype attempts over the past few years.

Within HTD_Blog’s post, the alleged gameplay loop is described as follows: players would take on the role of a soldier—compared to an ODST—then travel across different planets to tackle content like dungeons and raids, paralleling the structure popularized by Destiny 2, but set inside the Halo universe.

HTD_Blog closes their message with a caution that readers should treat the information skeptically, because the claims are attributed to “a friend who has worked in a role where he would know this information.” TechnicalHalo, meanwhile, is presented as the more dependable insider, noting their earlier track record with reporting on Halo’s Project Ekur and the alleged Halo trilogy remakes. Even so, the overall advice from the community is still the same: take current rumors as rumors until something is officially confirmed.

Destiny leaving the MMO shooter space would create a major gap, especially since it was a pioneer of the genre. While other looter-shooter and MMO-lite games—such as Warframe and The Division 2—have continued to perform well, few have matched the peak highs of Destiny. If this rumored Halo MMOFPS does get made and becomes a breakout success, it would land a bit ironically: having Halo potentially fill the niche left by the game that the original Halo studio helped define in the first place.

There’s also a major practical problem that could stand in the way: budget. As Destiny 2 and its teams approached their final stretch of support, reports claimed the game was too costly to keep running, and that a hypothetical Destiny 3 would require more than $500 million to build—one reason the next chapter wasn’t moving forward. Now that Xbox is in a “cuts and reshuffle” phase, plenty remains uncertain about whether the publisher can fund and deliver a Halo experience capable of surpassing Destiny, especially as the industry enters another period of tight financial conditions.
