GTA 6: Rockstar’s Miami research team aims for a truly lived-in setting
As Grand Theft Auto 6 moves closer to its November release, more details about Rockstar’s production approach are coming into focus—especially how far the studio says it has gone to make the game’s setting feel lived-in. A recent interview highlights an unusually deep research push, including a dedicated team stationed in Miami and a broader effort to capture local culture across multiple creative disciplines.
Rockstar’s Miami research push
In an interview with staff members at Rockstar Games, the studio explained that GTA 6 aims for a stronger sense of immersion through NPCs designed to behave in individualized ways and respond directly to players. To support that goal, Rockstar reportedly sent multiple groups of employees to Miami and the surrounding area over the course of the past decade, and even established a permanent research team in the city.
Rockstar’s Senior Vice President of Narrative, Rupert Humphries, said the Miami team met with people connected to a wide range of real-world roles, including former criminals, police officers, and weapons dealers, describing the effort as a way to gain a clearer feel for the city and its culture.
Local culture, music, fashion, and authenticity
GTA 6 author Michael Wiafe emphasized that Rockstar intends to approach real Miami culture with openness and respect. The interview also notes that artists from Miami’s music scene and fashion world were visited as part of the research process, with the suggestion that some of their contributions may make their way into the game.
To understand Miami’s club culture in particular, the team reportedly looked at the Hip-Hop scene and Miami Bass. The studio also pointed to a collaboration that began in 2023 with stylist Jillian Carr, said to be aimed at translating Miami’s style in a more authentic way.
Other dedicated teams and expanded creative sourcing
Beyond Miami, the interview describes additional internal expansion. Rockstar says it has set up a separate Los Angeles operation focused specifically on NPC dialogue. The studio also claims to have engaged more than 50 real street art artists to help shape the murals in Vice City.
On the gameplay side, Rockstar says it assembled a team of race drivers to work on vehicle handling and behavior. Co-lead of Rockstar North Rob Nelson linked these efforts to a desire to learn from earlier projects and “consider things more thoroughly,” according to the interview.
