GTA 6 Could Add 60fps Performance Mode on Both Consoles, Insider Says
Reliable industry whispers that once pointed to a long-awaited story expansion for The Witcher 3 are now turning their attention to GTA 6. This time, the claim is that Rockstar will “very likely” add a 60fps performance option across consoles—not just on upgraded hardware.
Last week’s flood of Grand Theft Auto 6 updates might feel like it should settle the biggest unknowns. Instead, there are still plenty of gaps around Jason and Lucia’s Vice City adventure, including how the gameplay will function in practice and how the game will leverage specific platforms.
One of the biggest practical questions is also the most technical: can GTA 6 actually sustain 60 frames per second? A common expectation was that any true performance mode would be reserved for PS5 Pro, but a dependable insider report suggests Rockstar is working toward 60fps across the board—though it may not be ready right away for every version.
GTA 6’s 60fps Performance Mode Reportedly “Very Likely”
Not Necessarily a PS5 Pro-Only Feature
Insider Gaming points to a claim shared on the Rock and Borys podcast, a channel that previously got The Witcher 3 expansion news right after a long wait. In a new video discussion, the hosts say a “but very reliable” contact close to Rockstar provided details about how frame-rate options may be handled.
Based on that information, GTA 6 is expected to ship with two visual settings targeting different performance targets: one mode aimed at 30fps and another aimed at 60fps. The report specifically ties those two options to both PS5 and Xbox Series X, implying a quality-versus-performance split that many players have been hoping for.
The same source also states that Xbox Series S is currently stuck at 30fps. Even so, Rockstar is reportedly “fighting” to bring the same performance option to the Series S as well, which would be a big deal for anyone on the less powerful console.
That said, Rock and Borys note they aren’t “100 percent sure” the higher-performance option will be available at launch. In other words, the intent may be there, but timing could affect which platforms get the full 60fps experience on day one.
It’s also worth remembering that console frame-rate expectations haven’t always been met historically. Red Dead Redemption 2 debuted on consoles without a 60fps mode, and while players eventually got next-gen upgrades, it still took a long time to arrive.
Many GTA 6 fans assumed PS5 Pro would bring the most noticeable frame-rate improvements—and that the original PS5 might struggle to reach 60fps. But the Rock and Borys report suggests Rockstar is pushing hard to support the performance mode across all consoles, with the Series S described as the current exception.
