From ARPA to Microsoft’s Laser Gaming Mouse: Sept. 6 Tech Milestones

Septembers 6th has quietly marked three major milestones in tech and gaming-adjacent history: the ARPA effort that led to a foundational computer network, a legal turning point for Microsoft’s business structure in the early 2000s, and the company’s move to seize a share of the PC hardware market with a laser gaming mouse. While these events happened across different eras, they all reflect the same underlying theme—how infrastructure, regulation, and hardware choices shape what players and developers eventually get to build on.

From ARPA funding to ARPAnet’s blueprint

In 1968, the U.S. research agency ARPA set an ambitious goal: building a nationwide computer network for scientific use. To make it happen, ARPA issued a call to more than 140 companies for proposals related to developing the required infrastructure. The challenge was steep because most computers of the time were not designed for continuous operation as network servers; they would still require maintenance multiple times per week. Only a small number of firms felt capable of handling the complex technical work involved.

One of those capable teams was Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN). On September 6, 1968, BBN submitted a detailed proposal that ran to 200 pages. ARPA awarded the contract to BBN, and the company went on to develop the first computer network: ARPAnet, widely recognized as a precursor to the modern Internet.

Microsoft’s antitrust outcome reshapes the company

Jumping forward to 2001, the U.S. Department of Justice clarified on September 6 that Microsoft should not be broken up as part of the ongoing antitrust case. Earlier, a court had demanded the company be divided into separate parts, arguing Microsoft used its dominant position in the software market to maintain control. Under the DOJ’s updated stance, the focus shifted away from a forced split and toward smaller restrictions instead.

Later the same calendar date became important for a different reason: PC peripherals and the gaming hardware market. In 2005, Microsoft introduced the Laser Mouse 6000 on September 6, positioning it directly at players and signaling a renewed push into a lucrative area of PC spending. The reasoning was straightforward—Microsoft no longer wanted to leave competitors such as Logitech to own that segment.

The Laser Mouse 6000 also represented a notable change in direction for the company’s pointing devices. Microsoft had already produced player-oriented input hardware through its Sidewinder line, including devices aimed at gamers. But the Sidewinder brand was discontinued in 2003, only to be brought back later in 2007. The Laser Mouse 6000 marked Microsoft’s first mouse of its own line equipped with a laser sensor, aligning the company’s hardware strategy more explicitly with gaming needs at the time.
