Euro Truck Simulator 2 1.61 Open Beta Adds New Map Discovery and Animal Trailer
SCS Software has opened an open beta for Euro Truck Simulator 2 update 1.61, bringing a new optional map discovery approach, a full rebuild of the game’s animal transport trailer, and further groundwork for upcoming coaches content. The changes are designed to make exploration more convenient while still leaving room for secret routes—plus more map and interface polishing as the next bus-focused DLC approaches.

Proximity Exploration: easier map completion, with a hint-based secret system
The headline feature in 1.61 is Proximity Exploration, an optional system intended to streamline how players uncover map areas. When enabled, a small area around the truck is automatically counted as discovered—meaning you don’t have to drive over every tiny stretch of road just to reach full exploration targets. This is specifically positioned as a quality-of-life boost for players chasing 100% map completion.
Importantly, secret discovery hasn’t been removed. Proximity Exploration can reveal the first fragment of a secret road once you get close enough, acting as an early clue that something new may be nearby. After that initial hint, the rest still depends on your actual driving through the area.
Animal transport trailer overhaul: rebuilt model, new chassis choices, and customization
Update 1.61 also includes a complete redesign of the animal transport trailer. The trailer model has been built from scratch and adjusted to match modern European construction standards. Owners of the trailer will be able to choose between two chassis variants, along with different body options—either aluminum or fully painted—plus additional accessories intended to expand personalization.
Schwarzmüller Trailer Pack refresh begins, with more updates planned
On top of the animal trailer work, SCS Software has started an update process for the Schwarzmüller Trailer Pack. The first step is a rebuild of one low loader trailer and its accessories, aligning it with current models from that manufacturer. The developer also says it plans to update the entire DLC in the future.
Preparing for Coaches DLC: new and updated bus routes, terminals, and border changes
Patch 1.61 is also setting the stage for the incoming Coaches DLC, which will add coaches and passenger transport. In Nuremberg, a new bus station has been added, and surrounding map elements have been adjusted.
Additional station updates are included for Karlstad, Aarhus, and Thessaloniki. In Heraklion, a previously unavailable street has been opened. The update further adjusts border crossings to support coach traffic.
What’s changed in the beta: two tested features removed from 1.61
While 1.61 adds new systems and content groundwork, it also removes two functions that had been tested earlier in an experimental build: the Multi-Function Display (MFD) interface and a new in-game menu. SCS Software has determined that both still need additional refinement before they’re ready.
Beta warning
Because update 1.61 is available only as an open beta, players should expect potential bugs and instability while testing. Access is available through Steam by selecting the “public_beta” branch under the game’s Beta settings.
