College Football 27 Guide: Master the QB Pump Fake to Beat Sticky Defenses
Even the cleanest offensive plan can collapse when College Football 27 drops you into a matchup with a stingy defense. If your usual running lanes keep getting swallowed at the line, or your favorite target is getting locked down as soon as the ball is snapped, you’ll need a wrinkle that changes what the defense expects. That’s where learning to pump fake with your Quarterback can pay off—either to buy space for a QB run to the first down, or to pull defenders toward one side and open up a receiver on the other.
How to Pump Fake in College Football 27
To perform a pump fake, double-tap the button assigned to the receiver you want to fake a throw toward, after your Quarterback has taken the ball from the snap. For instance, if your receiver linked to the Square/X button is sprinting down the left side of the field, you’ll usually want to move your QB in that direction first, then double-tap Square/X.
This input makes your QB act like they’re preparing to throw to that side. Getting your QB positioned near the same side as the “target” you’re faking can make the motion feel more believable, and it can also encourage the defense to shift away—potentially giving your other receiver more room on the opposite flank.
Try a pump fake most often when you’ve called a passing play with multiple routes, especially when the routes take time to develop. With a longer-developing concept, you buy yourself extra seconds for the play to form and for the fake to influence computer defenders or an online opponent.
Be careful with timing: don’t hold the button or let too much time pass between the two taps. If you do, the game may interpret it as an actual throw instead of a pump fake, and depending on your passing settings, that “accidental” throw might not be very accurate either.
Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Pump Fake
Used correctly, a pump fake can be the difference between a turnover and a touchdown. Used poorly, it can also give the defense exactly what it wants—so keep these guidelines in mind.
Quick facts
- Use pump fakes mainly when your chosen play gives your QB time after the snap, but also read the defense—if an edge rusher is closing fast, consider a safer pass or rushing for a few yards instead.
- Avoid repeating pump fakes over and over in the same game, since both AI and online opponents can catch on.
- Don’t pump fake to the same receiver and then immediately throw to that same player, unless you’re intentionally trying to create a double-bluff; it’s generally not recommended.
