Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Fort Capture Guide: Take Control Fast

Crossing the Caribbean in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced means you’ll be busy with everything from Naval Contracts to crafting materials gathered by harpooning sharks—and, when you’re ready, taking on fortresses that are heavily guarded and hard to crack.

Fort capture is a major part of how your world opens up. Each region contains at least one fort, and taking control of it clears the fog over that portion of the map. You’ll also uncover new locations, earn gold, and pick up ship cosmetics. On top of that, forts are tied to unlocking additional Fleet missions—so before you commit to an attack, here’s how the whole process works.

And if you’ve been stuck trying to interpret the game’s treasure maps, don’t worry—there’s help on that front too.

How to Capture Forts in AC Black Flag Resynced

After you acquire the Jackdaw during Sequence 3, you’ll clear a few story moments before the game formally introduces you to fort assaults. The first fort acts like a tutorial, but the core method stays consistent across later targets.

Your first step is to eliminate every defensive tower that surrounds the fort. When the Jackdaw has a clean firing line, use its broadside cannons. Also keep mortars in mind: they’re especially useful for dealing damage to towers from a safer distance before you sail closer.

Once all towers are destroyed, the assault shifts into its second phase. Leave the Jackdaw and enter the fort interior, where you’ll fight defending soldiers to reduce the fort’s morale. While you push through the grounds, look out for explosive barrels—setting them off can shave off a noticeable portion of the morale bar, speeding up the capture.

When the morale meter hits zero, head to the war room near the top of the fort and defeat the commander in combat. After the commander is defeated, the fort is officially yours.

The early fort you capture during the story is fairly manageable since it’s guarded by only two towers. Later forts ramp things up significantly. Some strongholds can feature as many as nine defensive towers, and they can bombard your ship with mortar fire all at once. If your Hull Armor hasn’t been upgraded, you may find your health drops faster than expected.

Towers aren’t even the only threat. As soon as you enter a fort’s territory, it can call in reinforcements from nearby ships. Depending on the region, that could mean multiple heavily armed vessels—or even Man o’ Wars—which puts you in a stressful situation where incoming broadsides and mortar strikes hit at the same time.

Instead of charging straight into the danger zone, clear out nearby ships first. Smaller enemies can be pulled away from the fort by firing a mortar shell close to them; this can let you sink those vessels without the fort fully joining the fight. If your ship starts taking too much damage, board one of the enemy ships and choose Restore Health to repair the Jackdaw before resuming the assault.

If the area is packed with Man o’ Wars, you don’t necessarily have to force a direct engagement. Fast travel to the nearest island, then sail back—there’s a strong chance the ships positioned around the fort will have shifted, making the encounter far more manageable when you return.

With the surrounding waters under control, you can finally focus on the towers again. Keep moving rather than anchoring in place, because staying still makes you a predictable target for mortar impacts. Pay attention to the large orange circles on the water and steer clear of them while continuously firing your mortars and cannons until every tower is destroyed.

Once you reach the larger forts, the ground fight is tougher as well, largely due to the increased number of enemies. Still, once you defeat the defenders and win the duel with the commander, you’ll receive a substantial payout of money, useful resources, and new ship cosmetics. Even better, the entire region becomes visible on your map, which makes exploration and future missions simpler.
