Fallout 3 Remake Confirmed in Talks, Jeff Gerstmann Says It’s Real

A Fallout 3 remake really is in the works, claims games industry figure Jeff Gerstmann, who discussed the project openly during a recent livestream. Rumors about a remaster or remake of the original 2008 RPG have circulated for years, but hard details have stayed thin enough that many players still doubt anything concrete exists. Bethesda’s more recent releases, however, have made the idea feel increasingly plausible.

The renewed momentum appears to have been boosted by the release of Oblivion Remastered, which strengthened chatter that Bethesda could be preparing updated versions of other classic titles built on its Gamebryo/Creation Engine tech. Additional context also showed up in September 2023 FTC court documents submitted by Microsoft, where remastered or remade versions of Bethesda’s older Creation Engine-era RPGs were discussed. What remains unclear is whether Bethesda ultimately initiated every project mentioned, and—if it did—how far along each one is. Gerstmann says he has more insight than that.

With production on Fallout Season 3 now underway, the live-action timeline also makes the idea of a matching game release period feel easier to imagine.

Fallout 3 Remake Is “A Thing,” Jeff Gerstmann Says

Gerstmann brought up the alleged Fallout 3 remake during episode 213 of the Jeff Gerstmann Show. In that episode, he was talking about the wave of layoffs and internal reshuffling happening at Xbox, with a specific focus on Bethesda’s direction. He pointed to Bethesda’s decision to concentrate on its most popular and successful franchises, framing it as a signal that the company is preparing to lean harder into what comes next.

Gerstmann’s remarks included the idea that Bethesda is likely to “quadruple down” on the next Elder Scrolls, and that a Fallout project may be moving into development. He also claimed that Bethesda itself would not be the one to produce the remake directly, adding that other teams have reportedly been putting work into a Fallout 3 remake that has yet to be officially revealed. He said he has seen footage of a Fallout 3 remake, which—if true—would imply the project has entered production, even if its status is still uncertain to outsiders.

He further suggested that, given the current environment at Xbox, a Fallout 3 remake would fit neatly with the company’s stated push back toward major core franchises.

Gerstmann isn’t the only prominent voice discussing the possibility of a Fallout 3 remake either. Microsoft insider Jez Corden has also weighed in, with claims that the remake could land next year. Filming for the third season of the Fallout TV series began in May, which makes a 2027 release window feel likely. If a Fallout 3 remake were timed alongside that, it could also be a major marketing and financial win for Bethesda.

Jez Corden has been sharing updates about Bethesda’s behind-the-scenes projects for some time. He has remained consistent about remakes/remasters launching in 2027, though he has not previously claimed to have seen actual gameplay footage—something Gerstmann is said to be the only one providing at the moment. For now, Gerstmann’s footage claim is positioned as the strongest sign that real progress is happening, even if much of the situation still exists outside official confirmation. As with any unverified project chatter, it’s still wise for players to take it cautiously, but Gerstmann has reportedly been reliable in the past and tends to avoid discussing unconfirmed plans when possible.

From a broader perspective, it’s also easy to see why Bethesda would want to move quickly on updated versions of both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, especially after the success of Oblivion Remastered.
