Ubisoft Fixes Steam Download Issue for Heroes of Might and Magic III
Ubisoft has corrected a major Steam availability issue for the original Heroes of Might and Magic III by pushing an update reportedly weighing in at about 770 MB, allowing buyers to finally download the actual game files. Even so, a small number of players have still reported occasional problems such as crashes, though those reports appear to be rare.
What went wrong on Steam
The issue first came to light around the original announcement period for Ubisoft’s “complete” release of the classic. After purchase, Steam downloads were reported to be far too small to contain a playable game—only a little over 24 kilobytes—seemingly limited to the Heroes3.exe file with nothing else. Instead of launching normally, Steam users were then shown a message indicating an inappropriate or mismatched version branch.
Because the download size was so low, the game could not be started as expected, leaving many customers effectively unable to play.
How Ubisoft fixed it
Ubisoft later resolved the situation by issuing an update estimated at roughly 770 MB, which appears to have supplied the missing files needed for a proper installation/download. After that patch, Steam purchasers could begin downloading the game content.
Are there still problems?
While the download issue has been described as corrected, some players have continued to post isolated complaints, including crashes. However, the reports described in the initial wave of feedback were unusually limited in number, suggesting the remaining problems may not affect most players.
Quick checklist if you’re trying to play
- Confirm you’ve allowed Steam to fully download and apply the update (the fix was reported as approximately 770 MB).
- If you still see a “wrong version/branch” type message, re-check that the update has completed.
- If the game launches but you encounter crashes, keep an eye out for further follow-up from Ubisoft as more reports come in.
Why players were concerned
Some players also pointed out the unusual nature of the initial problem: there was no clear official communication about releasing the original Heroes of Might and Magic III on Steam at the time the card was available. That led to speculation that Ubisoft may have made the listing live before the correct files were ready—an awkward “starter” state that appears to have been corrected only after the later patch.
Current status
The Steam storefront reception reported at the time of the incident showed a very small review count with a heavy tilt toward negative feedback, reflecting how widespread the “tiny download” failure was for early purchasers. After the fix, Ubisoft’s update should address the missing-content problem, but the rare crash reports indicate that follow-up monitoring may still be needed.
