How to Master Rhythm Heaven Groove’s Disc Dog and Stop Getting Stuck

In Rhythm Heaven Groove, Stage 1 is packed with small rhythm challenges—but for a lot of players, the real troublemaker isn’t the Hoop Trundling mini-game or the cute umbrella-themed Brolly Good Show. The third game in that early set, Disc Dog, is the one that tends to frustrate people: an overbearing beach character tosses a Frisbee, and you have to time your inputs so a dog jumps and catches it on the beat count of 7.

I personally needed a couple of attempts before I could clear Disc Dog at all (I may circle back later to grab the Medal), and one very particular “trick” is what helped me get through with far fewer dropped catches. It’s also not just me—there’s plenty of discussion from other players on Reddit, with many complaining about how hard this specific challenge feels.

Separately from the rhythm struggle, a Switch exclusive release has been taken down from the eShop, and fans say they weren’t given any advance heads-up from Nintendo or the people behind the game.

How to Beat Disc Dog in Rhythm Heaven Groove

If you’re stuck on Disc Dog, the biggest practical advice is simple: close your eyes. The mini-game still gives you the information you need through audio. You’ll hear the whistle cues when the Frisbee is thrown, then you can tap along with the rhythm or say the numbers out loud—when you reach the count of 7, you press the jump input using the A button. The catch is that you must hit the button exactly as the count lands on 7, not early and not late.

It’s also worth avoiding the temptation to stare at the disc in midair to “eyeball” the timing. That approach usually backfires and leads to missed catches. Many of the minigames in Rhythm Heaven Groove can be handled without relying on what you see—what matters is that you feel the music and trust the sound cues instead.

Once Disc Dog is cleared, you’ll move on to the last standalone minigame in Stage 1, titled Feeding the Beast. After that, the game escalates again by asking you to complete a remix-style level that combines all four Stage 1 minigames together.
