Re:Zero and Slime Season 4 Spark a Modern Isekai Comeback in 2026
Isekai anime has been unusually active in 2026, with plenty of new entries and major returns keeping the “otherworld” conveyor belt running at full speed. A number of those shows have already aired and picked up strong global reception, including Re:Zero Season 4 and That Time I Reincarnated as a Slime Season 4. With so many parallel isekai storylines unfolding, there’s still more on the way before the year wraps.
Among the biggest nameplates scheduled to come back, Mushoku Tensei is finally returning in July after a two-year gap. The series is set to launch Season 3 on July 5, 2026, bringing Rudeus Greyrat back into the spotlight. Fans are already treating this as a “big one,” especially since the season is positioned as its strongest swing yet.
The King of Isekai Anime ‘Mushoku Tensei’ Returns With Season 3 on July 5, 2026
Isekai is one of Japan’s most popular lanes for novels, manga, and anime. At its core, it’s a storytelling framework where a character ends up somewhere else—often through reincarnation or teleportation into a brand-new world. That premise has pulled in readers and viewers for years, and it’s also inspired countless creators to jump in and adapt the formula.
Even with all that competition, only a handful of series manage to stand out in such a crowded category. Mushoku Tensei is one of those rare cases, and its journey from printed pages to a major TV anime rollout is part of why it remains such a cultural fixture.
The franchise began as a novel written by Rifujin na Magonote. It ran as a serialization starting on November 22, 2012 and concluded on April 3, 2015. After that success, the story expanded into a light novel format with illustrations by Shirotaka, published from January 24, 2014 through November 25, 2022.
Still, the most visible milestone is the TV anime adaptation produced by Studio Bind. It premiered on January 11, 2021 with Season 1, titled Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. Studio Bind returned again for Season 2 on July 3, 2023, and then later brought fans Season 2’s follow-up run on July 1, 2024—after which there was no new season for a stretch. That wait is ending soon: on July 5, 2026, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation will officially come back with Season 3.

Season 3 is the next chapter, and production has been on fans’ radar since the final episode of Season 2 aired. The sequel was formally revealed on January 10, 2026, and now the release is only days away. The studio’s early information points to a lengthy run—27 episodes in total.
As with the previous season, Season 3 is expected to be divided into two cours. That means the show should deliver roughly 13 to 14 episodes during 2026, then come back after a short break to finish the remaining installments in 2027. While there hasn’t been a lot of new visual material shared yet, the first real tease arrived via an official trailer released almost a year earlier, on July 6, 2025.
Isekai anime often leans into overpowered protagonists, sometimes to the point where they’re casually capable of feats that would level entire cities. The best entries, though, are the ones that make that power fantasy feel earned and fun rather than empty.
Why Mushoku Tensei’s Upcoming Season 3 Arc Establishes It As The Isekai King
Mushoku Tensei is a controversial series, and that isn’t just internet chatter. Many viewers will still point to its strong writing and the standout craft of its storytelling, but they’ll also cite the protagonist’s character work—Rudeus Greyrat in particular—as a major sticking point.
Even with that divide, a lot of the audience is counting down to what comes next in Season 3. And the argument being made is that this new run could end up being the series’ best—one that truly cements Mushoku Tensei as a top-tier “King of Isekai.”
The premise starts with a man in his 30s who’s living in the real world. After he’s struck by a truck and dies, he wakes up reincarnated as a baby in a fantasy setting packed with magic and battles. In this second chance, he tries to live without regrets and make the most of his new life—though that intention is easier to state than to carry out.
Heading into Season 3, the story begins the Turning Point 4 Arc, which many fans describe as the best stretch of the entire series. The tone is also expected to shift sharply: Season 3 is set up to grow much darker, with stakes pushed to their limits. If that escalation lands the way viewers hope, it could elevate the entire isekai experience even further.
From the plot breakdowns and fan feedback tied to the light novel material, Season 3 is expected to include some of the franchise’s strongest story beats. Looking ahead to next year, there’s also a belief that the anime will be able to compete for attention at Crunchyroll’s 2027 Awards—specifically in the category for Isekai of the Year. The series has been nominated before, but it hasn’t won at that ceremony yet, leaving 2027 as the potential year it finally takes the crown.

2026 Is Giving Us A Plethora Of Isekai Anime But Mushoku Tensei Season 3 Will Stand Out
For many isekai fans, the next few days are about the long-awaited return of Mushoku Tensei after an unusually lengthy wait. Of course, it’s not the only isekai worth watching in 2026. There have already been acclaimed releases earlier in the year, and more new entries are still scheduled later on.
One of the most celebrated isekai franchises made its comeback earlier in 2026: Re:Zero. Re:Zero Season 3 won Isekai of the Year at the Crunchyroll 2026 awards, and it’s also described as the highest-rated isekai of all time on MAL. Those points are presented as proof of its major impact and continued presence across the anime community.

Even though some of these other titles are still relatively newer and smaller compared to the biggest giants, there’s also Lord of Mysteries stirring up the isekai landscape. It’s a Chinese anime, and it’s been drawing attention with a fresh take on the genre. While its full anime run hasn’t returned in 2026 yet, the series did receive three special episodes in June 2026, aimed at adding context to the story.
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime also delivered a strong return that longtime fans were waiting for. The show came back with a fourth season on April 3, 2026, airing alongside Mushoku Tensei. On top of the series revival, the IP also received a major film release titled Tears of the Azure Sea. With all this, Mushoku Tensei is facing serious competition in 2026, but the expectation is that if the light novel’s quality translates to the anime, it should outshine the field.
All episodes of Mushoku Tensei are available to watch on Crunchyroll.
