Vinicius Handed Four-Game La Liga Ban After Villarreal Red Card
Real Madrid will be without Vinicius for four La Liga matches after the Brazilian received a red card against Villarreal, leaving Jose Mourinho to assess an attack already under scrutiny following the winger’s difficult start to the season.
The suspension, communicated to Vinicius only when he arrived at the stadium, will also rule him out of the first Clasico of the campaign. He said the timing of the notification had left him confused, having learned of the ban “as I get to the stadium”.
It is the latest setback in a turbulent period for Vinicius, who committed to a long-term Madrid contract this summer after extended talks and a transfer saga involving Arsenal. His decision to remain at the Bernabeu came as Mourinho began another spell in charge, but the forward has not yet recovered his usual influence.
Roma substitution underlined concerns
Vinicius’ recent Champions League display against Roma brought those concerns into sharper focus. Madrid were 3-1 behind at the Stadio Olimpico when Mourinho withdrew him shortly before the hour after a loss of possession contributed to Roma’s second goal.
The decision proved decisive. Endrick and Arda Guler entered and helped shift the momentum, with Endrick, Carlos Espi and Antonio Rudiger scoring as Madrid completed a remarkable comeback.
Vinicius made clear that he did not welcome the early change, although he said his reaction was natural because he always wants to remain on the pitch.
Questions over Mbappe partnership
Attention has also focused on Vinicius’ connection with Kylian Mbappe. The two high-profile forwards have struggled to establish a consistently productive partnership, adding to the pressure around Madrid’s attack.
Former France defender Marcel Desailly believes the club should have considered a different solution. In his view, Madrid would have been better served by allowing Vinicius to depart and recruiting alternative options to create a more balanced side.
Desailly said the Mbappe-Vinicius combination had not delivered the desired results and suggested that a move elsewhere might have helped the Brazilian escape the negative attention surrounding his performances.
Endrick and Guler can press their case
Mourinho now has four league fixtures to manage without Vinicius, including the season’s first meeting with Barcelona. Endrick and Guler are likely to receive greater opportunities after their impact in Rome, while Madrid test whether their attacking play can function more smoothly in Vinicius’ absence.
For Vinicius, the enforced pause may offer time away from the immediate pressure. Whether it becomes a reset or further strengthens the debate over his role alongside Mbappe will depend on how Madrid perform during his suspension and how he responds on his return.
