Ubisoft Barcelona Cuts 51 Jobs Linked to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resync
A fresh report claims Ubisoft Barcelona has cut 51 jobs, with multiple affected staffers pointing to work connected to the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. The situation also reportedly ties into longer-running concerns about how the studio treats employees and how decisions are made at higher levels.
Ubisoft Barcelona Has Lost 51 Employees
In late June, rumors circulated that 51 people at Ubisoft Barcelona were at risk of layoffs. The studio reportedly tried to hold off the cuts by using a union-led work action—coordinated through the Video Game Union Coordinating Committee—where employees would strike every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon until July 16.
A later update from Insider Gaming states that those 51 roles were ultimately eliminated, and that the Ubisoft Barcelona team has been fully broken up.
What Led to the Cuts
Anonymous sources close to the studio’s internal situation reportedly said many of the employees were previously involved with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Those same sources also described the remake as “highly successful,” at least when judged by the level of interest before release and the number of pre-orders. They noted that the game’s critical reception has been very positive as well.
Even so, sources impacted by the layoffs told the outlet that the decision felt “premeditated.” The claim is that the layoffs were planned in advance and were going to happen regardless of how Black Flag performed, either critically or commercially.
Part of the frustration, according to the affected developers, was that Ubisoft Barcelona had not been given a new assignment before Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launched. Developers say it’s typical within the company for leadership to move studios onto their next project well before the current one ships. However, staff members reportedly raised concerns during Summer 2025 that they didn’t have a follow-up assignment lined up—and still, no new project was provided.
The same sources also say an event meant to mark Ubisoft Barcelona’s completion of Assassins’ Creed Black Flag Resynced was scrapped. Instead, it was replaced with a smaller celebration inside the office.
Reaction From an Affected Employee
One anonymous source tied to this round of layoffs offered the following statement:
“These layoffs coincide with the broader context of ongoing workplace issues. This is not an isolated event; it reflects a pattern of constant mistreatment, loss of talent, forced departures resulting from the erosion of workers’ rights, and an increasingly top-down management culture that leaves employees with little voice in decisions affecting their work.”
