Rogue Trader Guide: Capture the Interstellar Sextant Before It Escapes

In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, the Interstellar Sextant is the kind of encounter that immediately tells you whether your fleet is ready or not. The pirate ship shows up already trying to slip away, and if you want its crew to surrender before it vanishes with a void jump, you’ll need both raw firepower and the right ship tools to land enough damage before the clock runs out. It’s hard to call this anything other than a gear check—so if you’re determined to capture the Interstellar Sextant before it disappears into the void, here’s what to bring.

How the encounter works (and why it’s a gear check)

When you first run into the Interstellar Sextant, the game makes it clear that the enemy is preparing to escape. To force a surrender instead of losing the target to a void jump, you have to reduce the ship’s hull to at least 50% within a very tight window.

The situation is especially punishing early in a campaign: you can encounter the Interstellar Sextant relatively soon, and if you’re not already kitted out, you’re likely to struggle. The Sextant will more than likely move on its first turn, and because it immediately starts prepping for a void jump, you’ll only have two turns to bring its hull down to the required threshold.

What to upgrade before you try again

The most reliable approach is to leave the fight for later—then return once your ship has specific upgrades that let you act early and maximize burst damage.

  • Silent Running II is critical, because it allows you to take actions before the Interstellar Sextant does.
  • Expeditious Reload gives you the ability to fire your cannons twice in a single turn, as long as the first salvo is fired during the acceleration phase. In practice, that means you should shoot while you’re on the least-colored cells shown on your movement/turn display.
  • Arc Augury extends your weapon reach by 2 cells, giving you a better chance to land hits on the Interstellar Sextant without needing to close distance immediately.
  • Buy some better weapons from the Imperial Navy vendor to make your damage output line up with the short time limit of the encounter.

Also, don’t ignore companion placement. Set your companions to different Posts aboard your ship in Rogue Trader. This lets you improve ship abilities depending on who you assign to each post, which can directly affect how smoothly this fight goes.

Recommended loadout and a simple damage plan

For this encounter, focus on long-range weapon options—ideally outfitted on your Prow and Dorsal slots. In one playthrough, a long-ranged starboard Hecutor Plasma Battery shot, combined with a beam fired from the Godsbane Lance on the Dorsal slot, was enough to disable the Interstellar Sextent on the first turn.

You may be able to make shorter- or medium-range Macro-Cannons and Torpedoes work, but the outcome will largely depend on the three key abilities listed above: Silent Running II, Expeditious Reload, and Arc Augury.

The plan is straightforward:

  1. Get into range of the Sextant (use Arc Augury if you need help reaching it).
  2. Blast the target using your cannons.
  3. Move as close as you can to the Sextant, preferably keeping your port/starboard cannons aimed at it.
  4. Use Expeditious Reload.
  5. Blast the Sextant again.
  6. If the enemy still hasn’t surrendered and you’ve used every attack you have, deploy your torpedoes.

Interstellar Sextant rewards and what you get

If you manage to capture the Interstellar Sextant, you’ll walk away with Scrap, trade goods that help you earn reputation with factions, and a Starbreaker Lance Weapon that can be equipped on your ship’s Dorsal weapon slot.

The Starbreaker is a medium-ranged beam weapon dealing 32–40 damage per shot. Personally, dorsal lance weapons are often a better fit because they tend to outrange most cannons. In the long run, the Starbreaker will serve you well until you obtain a Godsbane, which is effectively an upgraded version of it with higher damage.
