The Blood of Dawnwalker: Best Early Route After the Prologue Ends at Night
If you’re jumping into The Blood of Dawnwalker with the expectation that “freedom” will feel straightforward right away, the game’s early open-world setup may surprise you. After the prologue wraps, you’re dropped into a world where you’re free to choose your route—without much guidance on what to do next, beyond a single emotional objective.
Prologue complete, guidance still missing
Once you finish the prologue mission titled “Rauch und Asche,” the game transitions you into the open world. At that point, there isn’t a clear checklist of activities. The only broad direction you’re given is tied to rescuing your family, while the method is entirely up to you—something that can feel overwhelming for new players.
There’s also a guaranteed mission involving Anca, but it comes with two major downsides: it’s located far from you and the target area is set at a much higher level than you can realistically handle early on. Depending on choices made during the prologue, this may effectively be all you have to work with, or you may also have an additional quest called “Der Unruhestifter.”
First real task leads to a key faction
While the game’s early freedom is broad, it does provide your first concrete mission by pointing you toward the local mill. The mill is described as being just south of your home, and the initial step is straightforward: visit the miller and trigger the quest if it hasn’t appeared yet.
This is framed as the first “proper” mission that connects you to one of the game’s most important factions, making it a practical early priority even if you’re tempted to wander.
Day vs. night changes how the quest starts
One of the biggest early takeaways is that timing matters. Visiting the miller during the day versus at night dramatically alters the opening sequence of the quest. In daylight, the gameplay path allows you to avoid a fight. At night, you’ll be forced into defending yourself instead.
After that initial fork, the core objective stays the same: you’ll need to free the miller from a nearby fort. The game suggests handling this during the day to reduce unnecessary combat. However, the advice given is to disregard that recommendation—because the quest can play out differently than the in-game hint implies.
Story trailer released alongside the build-up
A new story trailer for The Blood of Dawnwalker has also been released, adding to the campaign’s focus on how you approach becoming a “master vampire”—and why your early choices can shape how your freedom feels in practice.
