Steam Turns Grit the Dark World Into a 100% Free Roguelite RPG for 2025
Grit the Dark World, a game that previously cost about $4.99 on Steam, has gone fully free-to-play. The move adds to a pattern that’s been spreading across the storefront this month, where more paid releases are dropping their price tags in hopes of drawing in a wider audience.
Since June 2026, at least two other titles have joined Steam’s growing free-to-play lineup after launching with a purchase price. One example is the 2025 2D platformer Greenhouse: Schism, which has recently transitioned to a completely free model. Another is Ellingboy House, a realistic 3D puzzle game that announced it would stop charging players and is now listed at $0.00. Grit the Dark World is now following that same path.
Steam players also have one final window to grab a free 2024 horror title before it’s permanently removed from the platform.

Solo developer Fareed announced on Steam Community that Grit the Dark World will no longer be sold as a paid game. In explaining the change, Fareed said the main goal is to hear from more players. SteamDB records show the title originally launched at $4.99, later dropped to roughly $1.99, and has now reached a fully free-to-play status on Steam.
What You’ll Get in Grit the Dark World (Gameplay Features)
Core mechanics and structure
- Endless waves of procedurally generated enemies
- Chapters that run about 30 minutes, ending in large boss encounters
- Spells with different chains plus combo-based combat
- Build-crafting options and permanent upgrades
- Multiple stages, each with its own map layout
- Top-down gameplay perspective
- Non-violent visuals
Grit the Dark World takes a wave-shooter approach to the survival horror genre. Fareed also describes it as a top-down roguelite that includes RPG elements. Its loop and bullet-hell style firefights are part of what makes it feel at home alongside streamer-friendly games like Vampire Survivors on Steam.

Players should remember that Grit the Dark World is a smaller indie release, so it may not have the same level of polish as bigger games in the survival or roguelite space. Still, the fact that it’s now free-to-play—and that it has modest PC requirements—makes it an approachable try. Even more importantly, the developer is actively seeking feedback and constructive criticism. Fareed said, “I want honest feedback about what’s working, what isn’t, and what I can improve. The more people who play, the more I can continue refining and expanding the experience.”

More Steam Freebies and Delisting Warnings
If you’re hunting for additional free-to-keep options, keep an eye on Glitched Out, a horror game on Steam that’s scheduled for delisting soon. Players can still retain it permanently by adding it to their library before it’s removed. Another title at risk of delisting is The Lonely Helmet, a 2D platformer. As with Glitched Out, you can keep The Lonely Helmet in your library if you claim it before the delisting deadline passes.
On the “free for good” front, Steam users should also watch for two games that could soon get the full 100% discount: The Life and Suffering of Sir Brante and Yet Another Zombie Defense HD.
