Sand: Raiders of Sophie Guide—Unlock the Dreadnought Black Door Step by Step

Unlocking the black door on the Dreadnaught in Sand: Raiders of Sophie is a multi-match scavenger hunt. You’ll need to survive a raid, locate a rare starting item, and then progress through a fixed sequence of doors and keys tied to named places on the map. The whole chain can’t be completed in one run, so plan on extracting and continuing the quest across multiple matches. Here’s the complete walkthrough for getting the black key and opening the black door.

Checklists

The Dreadnaught’s black door takes real legwork. You must complete the quest in phases—finding items, returning to the next location, and moving through door after door—rather than finishing everything during a single match. If you’re ready to commit to multiple raids, the steps below will show you exactly what to find and where to go.

How to Find and Open the Black Door

To reach the huge loot area aboard the Dreadnaught, you’ll start by finding a green key. That green key triggers the rest of the chain by letting you open specific doors at fixed points of interest. Even though the exact waypoints you encounter can vary from match to match, the doors you need to find remain consistent, and each step always leads to the next door.

How to Find Green Key

Finding the green key is luck-based. The most reliable approach is to search Rare Valuable Safes located in towns. You may also get lucky and find one while exploring the sandy wastes, including inside a wrecked or downed boat.

These safes resemble smaller bank-style locking cases. In general, the rarer the Valuable safe variant you open, the better your odds of getting the green key—but there’s no guarantee. You could pull the key early in a match or only discover it near the end.

Once you have the green key, check how much time remains. If you still have plenty of time, you can push forward and open the green door right away. If the clock is tight, it’s usually smarter to focus on extracting with the key and continue during your next raid.

The green key carries over between matches only if you extract it while it’s inside a box stored on a shelf on your walker, or if you have the key in your inventory when you leave.

Where to Use Green Key

With the green key in hand, head to Kaiserplatz. You should be able to locate it on your map when the match begins. For navigation, use your pocket map to identify points of interest rather than relying on the map displayed at the helm of your walker.

When you reach Kaiserplatz, go to the largest landmark structure at the top of the town. It resembles the interior of a large church.

Inside, on the ground floor, there’s a green door on the left side of the room. Use the green key on that door. Once inside, you’ll find a blue key sitting on the central desk in the back of the room. Grab it, then move on to the next landmark.

Where to Use Blue Key

Now, travel toward the Meeresauge. As with the prior step, you’re looking for a blue door—but it isn’t in the main city area. Instead, it’s located on the southwest side of the city inside a dock zone.

Look for a two-story building positioned right at the base of a dock. Enter the building through the front entrance, unlock the blue door, and then search inside. The red key is on a partially covered wooden chair within the building.

After collecting the red key, proceed to the next location.

Where to Use Red Key

The next stop is Segen. It’s similar to Kaiserplatz, but it lacks the hilltop building. For this phase, head to the far back of the city and locate a bank building.

When you enter the bank, you should see multiple teller stalls on the right side, along with stairs that lead upward. Make your way to the third floor.

On the third floor, there’s a red door. Use the red key on it. Inside, a white key will be located on one of the desks in the room. With the white key secured, you can move to the final landmark before the Dreadnaught.

Where to Use White Key

The last location you need to visit is Fort Istria. This is a heavily defended area, so bring several timed bombs if you can, or at least one.

When you arrive, the front doors will be locked. You have a few options to get inside: use the ship’s cannon to blast the entrance open, place a timed bomb to break it up, or throw a grenade if you have one available. Any of these methods will work.

After you breach the initial entry, you’ll face two red doors that block the path further in. You must destroy your way through them to continue.

Once those are down, there’s another red door to the right of the entrance that leads into the bottom section of the fort. Break through that door as well. You may not be able to use ship cannons for this part, but the process is the same: destroy the door and push deeper.

At the bottom, look for the white door at the base of the ladder. Inside is the item you’ve been hunting: the black key. Take it with you, and you’ll be ready to open the Dreadnaught.

Where to Use Black Key

Getting to the Dreadnaught is the hardest part of the chain. You can find it during the final phase of the match, when the situation gets chaotic. Expect players to fight for loot and to try to extract as quickly as possible. Multiple engagements are likely, so be ready before you commit to the run toward the ship.

The Dreadnaught is easy to recognize: it looks like a giant black ship sticking out of the sand.

Once you’re on the vessel, move through it quickly until you locate the black door. Use the black key to open it. You’ll then enter a large loot room where you can grab as much as possible before extracting.

While you’re looting, keep an eye on other players. Others may try to take the opportunity from you while you’re busy clearing the room.

Up Next: How to Extract

You’ll need to plan your extraction after opening the black door and loading up on loot. The next step is learning the safest, most efficient way to get out once the room is cleared and other players are aware of your position.
