Rio Ferdinand Urges Jorge Jesus to Mend Cristiano Ronaldo Rift
Rio Ferdinand has urged Jorge Jesus to repair his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo after the Al Nassr forward left Portugal’s camp early following a dispute during the latest Nations League fixtures.
The tension centred on Portugal’s match against Norway, when Ronaldo was told to prepare for a likely appearance over the final 30 minutes. The 41-year-old warmed up but remained on the bench after Jesus changed his plans, leaving the former Real Madrid and Juventus forward visibly unhappy.
Jesus said tactical alterations had led him to keep Ronaldo out of the game, but the decision has intensified questions over the veteran’s place in the national side under the new coaching set-up.
Ferdinand calls for apology
Ferdinand, who played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United from 2003 to 2009, criticised Jesus’s handling of the situation and said the coach had failed to show sufficient respect to a player with Ronaldo’s record.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was placed in an extremely difficult position and treated wrongly,” Ferdinand said on Rio Presents. “He has such a huge history in football. Jorge Jesus did not manage Ronaldo properly, and I cannot understand why he acted that way. This manager thinks he is Alex Ferguson or Pep Guardiola.”
The former England defender continued: “I do not know why he puts himself alongside the top coaches. There is no explanation for me. He needed to give Cristiano Ronaldo the respect he merited.”
Ferdinand believes clearer communication over Ronaldo’s role could have avoided the confrontation. In his view, uncertainty about whether Ronaldo is a starter or substitute risks creating instability in a Portugal squad that needs a settled approach.
He said Jesus should publicly acknowledge that the decision had been mishandled, warning that the coach’s position could come under pressure if the situation is not addressed.
“The coach needs to come forward and apologise; otherwise, he will eventually be sacked,” Ferdinand said. “He must say: ‘Listen, I got this situation wrong.’”
Ronaldo’s role remains the key issue
While debate continues over Ronaldo’s age and suitability for every match, Ferdinand insisted that the forward can still make an important contribution for Portugal. He argued that the priority is to establish an agreed role and then honour it.
“I think he still has a part to play,” Ferdinand said. “The issue is whether he starts, whether he is a major substitute in certain matches, or whether he begins some games and comes off the bench in others. That is what has to be discussed, and then the agreements need to be respected.
“Coaches are paid to manage a side, but they are also paid to manage people.”
