Nicolo Tresoldi Delays Germany or Italy Senior International Decision
Germany Under-21 striker Tresoldi has delayed a decision on whether to represent Germany or Italy at senior level after speaking directly with Jürgen Klopp, Rudi Völler and Italy coach Roberto Mancini.
The 22-year-old, who is eligible for both countries, was approached about a senior Germany call-up by Klopp but chose not to make an immediate commitment. Tresoldi said the conversations have reinforced that he can take time over a choice that will shape the rest of his international career.
Klopp first contacted the forward by message, signing it “Best wishes, Kloppo”, before the pair continued their discussion by text and telephone. Tresoldi admitted that the prospect of the call left both him and his parents anxious, but said Germany’s manager handled his uncertainty with understanding.
“It was a very good conversation,” Tresoldi said. “He understood my situation very well. He is a great coach and a great person, and I am very thankful for his support.”
Völler has also spoken to the striker on several occasions. The Germany sporting director’s experience as a player in Italy has given him a particular understanding of the competing ties involved, Tresoldi said. The forward described it as significant to receive advice from a former striker of Völler’s standing.
Italy have made their own case through Mancini, who has personally contacted Tresoldi. The player said it was meaningful that two coaches with such successful records had taken the time to discuss his future, adding that their interest was an encouraging sign for his progress.
Tresoldi is not expected to settle the matter immediately. His priority is Germany Under-21s’ final European Championship qualifying fixture against Georgia on Tuesday night, following two consecutive wins during the current international window. He intends to revisit the senior-level decision once his youth-team commitments are complete and his club season has moved further forward.
