Krystian Bielik Banned Two Matches and Fined Over Portsmouth Incident
Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik has received a two-game suspension and a £10,000 fine after accepting an FA misconduct charge arising from the September 5 Championship match against Portsmouth.
An independent regulatory commission imposed the punishment after Bielik admitted he had behaved improperly during a second-half incident involving a young Portsmouth supporter at the edge of the pitch.
Quick facts
- Bielik was sanctioned over an incident in Cardiff’s September 5 Championship fixture with Portsmouth.
- The Poland international accepted the FA charge and was fined £10,000.
- He will be unavailable for Cardiff’s trip to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday and Watford’s visit the following Tuesday.
- Hampshire Police concluded their investigation with an out-of-court resolution, under which Bielik made a formal apology.
The confrontation began when Bielik went to collect a ball that had been returned towards the field. Footage of the exchange, in which the centre-back and the supporter became involved physically, circulated widely online after the match.
Hampshire Police investigated an allegation of common assault in the aftermath. The matter was settled without court proceedings, with Bielik apologising formally as part of the agreement.
Both clubs initially gave sharply different accounts of what happened. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho apologised to Cardiff after being told by referee Ben Speedle that Bielik had been hit by a fan.
Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said at the time that he believed Bielik had been struck across the face during the touchline dispute.
Mousinho revised his view four days later after watching the footage himself. He said his immediate post-match comments had relied entirely on information relayed to him after the final whistle.
Having seen the video, Mousinho said he was furious at having been placed in that position, adding that the images appeared to show Bielik grabbing the supporter before the fan responded.
The ban removes an important defensive option for Cardiff in successive Championship fixtures. Bielik will miss Saturday’s away game at Blackburn before sitting out the home meeting with Watford the following Tuesday.
