Netflix Sees Major Traffic Spike After GTA 6 Extended Look Premiere
Streaming-first premieres are usually a gamble, but the early decision to debut an extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix first appears to have paid off quickly. Shortly after the “extended look” went live, Netflix saw a major lift in both viewership and web/mobile traffic, alongside reports of a brief surge that at least some viewers experienced as buffering or platform hiccups.
Release-window and platform availability
| Event | Initial platform | Later platform | Timing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Extended Look for GTA 6 | Netflix | YouTube | Also posted on YouTube after six hours |
Analytics shared via Sensor Tower data (reported in coverage of the release) indicate Netflix engagement spiked immediately when the stream began. In the hour the transmission started, Netflix’s viewership rose by 35% compared with the prior hour. When compared against the same time the day before, the increase was roughly 50%.
The biggest jump showed up in how people used the service, not just whether they watched. The number of users on Netflix’s mobile app climbed to nearly 50% higher than the average recorded during the same hour across the previous 12 Thursdays. On the website side, traffic reportedly surged by 125% versus typical activity at that time.
That sudden attention was felt in real time during the presentation, with some viewers experiencing performance issues at the start—including cases where the platform struggled to run smoothly. Those problems were described as short-lived.
While the streaming arrangement was clearly structured, the deal terms were not publicly disclosed by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick. With no official numbers on the contract itself, the only conclusion available is that Netflix likely gained a brief window of exclusivity. After that limited period—six hours—the extended look was made available on YouTube as well.
Rockstar’s next game keeps stacking preorders
Separate figures from Sensor Tower also pointed to how large the pre-release demand is for Grand Theft Auto VI. Analysts estimated that players have already placed approximately 4.6 million preorders.
Most of those orders are tied to Sony hardware, with PlayStation consoles accounting for 77% of the total preorder count so far.
