The visitors had to withstand a strong Stuttgart challenge but were pleased with the authority shown in a match that was more controlled than Dortmund’s previous trip to the same ground. Sporting director Ole Book said the contest had been closely balanced, with BVB’s work at both ends proving decisive.
“It was a very even match,” Book said, adding that Dortmund’s sharper finishing and their defensive work in the penalty area had delivered the result. He and defender Waldemar Anton pointed to the continuation of defensive principles developed last season as a key reason for another shutout.
Anton felt Dortmund gave Stuttgart far fewer openings than they had managed on their last visit. “We had much more control than we did here last season and conceded very little,” the defender said.
Beier supplied the moment that separated the sides after the interval. Jobe Bellingham, introduced from the bench, sent a low ball across the six-yard area and the forward converted from close range.
The scorer said Dortmund’s first priority had been to deny Stuttgart, rather than force the match. “Keeping a clean sheet was the main task in Stuttgart, and we did that very well,” Beier said.
