Pablo Barrios’ 47-second strike sinks Manchester United at Atletico Madrid
Manchester United’s Champions League setback at Atletico Madrid was shaped within the opening minute, as Pablo Barrios struck after 47 seconds and the visitors could not recover despite a stronger second-half spell in Spain.
Alex Baena was allowed room to create the opening by Diogo Dalot, who did not follow the Atletico playmaker’s run. Baena supplied Barrios, whose finish beat Senne Lammens and became Atletico’s second-quickest goal in Champions League history.
The early concession left United chasing the match from the outset. Michael Carrick had altered his side in five places, with Carlos Baleba making his first start, but the visitors missed first-half opportunities through Bryan Mbeumo and Marcus Rashford.
United’s response falls short
United returned from the interval with greater purpose after discussing the need to press higher and play with more aggression. Youri Tielemans later said the dressing room had recognised that the side needed to be more positive and assertive following the damaging start.
Tielemans created United’s clearest route back into the contest in the 70th minute, lifting a pass into Bruno Fernandes. The captain struck the crossbar with his effort, leaving Jan Oblak beaten but Atletico still ahead.
Tielemans said the immediate goal had been difficult to absorb because United had intended to begin positively. He added that the team produced encouraging periods and chances after the break, but failed to convert their pressure into an equaliser.
Red card ends comeback hopes
Any remaining momentum disappeared four minutes after Fernandes hit the bar. Leny Yoro was dismissed directly for bringing down Jonathan David, leaving United with 10 men.
Ademola Lookman then made the result safe five minutes later, sealing a 2-0 Atletico victory and ending United’s hopes of taking anything from the tie.
The defeat made United the first English team to lose in this season’s Champions League. It also extended their run without a win in all competitions to five matches and represented only their second loss across their past 12 games against Spanish opponents.
Pressure on Carrick has increased after the previous weekend’s disappointing draw against Tottenham Hotspur, while United also carry their poorest points total after six league fixtures since 1986.
They now face another demanding assignment away to Leeds United in the derby, with little time to reset after a painful European night in Madrid.
