Lucas Bergvall Signs New Tottenham Deal After Backing De Zerbi Project
Lucas Bergvall has committed his future to Tottenham Hotspur with a new contract, reversing the position he took three months ago when he indicated that he wanted to leave the club. The 20-year-old Sweden international had become unsettled after limited involvement at the end of last season, but has now backed Roberto De Zerbi’s plans in north London.
What changed for the club
Keeping Bergvall is a significant outcome for Tottenham after a summer in which Nottingham Forest had a £38m offer rejected. Aston Villa and Chelsea were also following the midfielder’s situation as Spurs considered the possibility of losing one of their younger established players.
Bergvall said the club’s direction under De Zerbi convinced him to extend. He believes Tottenham are developing into “something great” and said the environment gives him the opportunity to improve both as a footballer and away from the pitch.
The renewal follows a difficult conclusion to the previous campaign, when Spurs narrowly avoided relegation and Bergvall’s opportunities diminished. De Zerbi had told his squad during the summer that he would not keep players who were unwilling to be part of the project, while later acknowledging he had made mistakes in his handling of the Swedish midfielder.
De Zerbi has now described Bergvall as a player with the appetite to learn, accept responsibility and perform in important matches. The Tottenham head coach believes the midfielder’s strongest years are still to come and said the club intend to provide the conditions for him to fulfil his potential.
Competition context
Bergvall has made 80 appearances for Tottenham in all competitions since arriving from Djurgarden in the summer of 2024. His progress had already led to an April 2025 extension that ran until 2031, before this latest agreement.
He has also earned 14 Sweden caps and was involved in the country’s historic run at this summer’s World Cup.

There is no immediate transfer decision left for Tottenham or Bergvall following the contract agreement. The focus now is on earning a larger role under De Zerbi after his limited league minutes in the opening weeks of the campaign.
For Bergvall, the next objective is to turn the renewed commitment into a regular contribution for Spurs. He said he is improving daily on the training ground and expects the season ahead to be a positive one for the club.
