Manchester City FFP Appeal Delays Premier League Verdict Until 2027
Manchester City’s appeal against the independent commission’s guilty findings means the Premier League case that has shadowed the club for more than three and a half years remains unresolved, with a final outcome not expected before the end of January 2027.
Why the case matters for City and the Premier League
| Key detail | Position |
|---|---|
| Period under scrutiny | 2009 to 2018 |
| Premier League titles won by City | Eight |
| Expected timing of definitive ruling | By the end of January 2027 |
| Appeal status | City have challenged the guilty findings |
The Premier League alleges that City engaged in “sham” business during the 2009-18 period, years in which the club established the platform for its rise into one of English football’s dominant sides. City deny wrongdoing and have appealed after the commission delivered guilty verdicts.
Any eventual punishment would depend on the final findings and the seriousness of any breaches upheld. Possible sanctions being discussed include financial penalties, a transfer restriction, points deductions, relegation or removal from the Premier League. There has also been debate over whether honours could be removed or reassigned, although that remains a hypothetical outcome.
City’s success during the period has included eight league championships, a Champions League triumph and domestic cup victories. The prospect of retrospective changes has therefore drawn attention from clubs and players involved in previous title races.
Michael Owen, who was part of Manchester United’s squad when City took the 2011-12 title following Sergio Aguero’s decisive final-day goal, said any assessment had to await the appeal process and the specific offences ultimately established.
The former United, Liverpool and Real Madrid forward believes a major sanction would be likely if the alleged rule breaches are confirmed at the reported level, but he said there are several different disciplinary routes available. Owen added that a retrospective Premier League medal would not carry the same meaning as winning a title at the time.
United won the league in 2010-11 during Owen’s spell at Old Trafford. His honours also include the FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Cup and the Ballon d’Or.
What remains unresolved
It is not yet known whether City’s appeal will alter the commission’s findings, what punishment could follow if breaches are upheld, or whether further appeals will be launched after the anticipated ruling in January 2027.
