Koumas was handed a major responsibility against City, starting in an attack depleted by the absences of Cody Gakpo and Alexander Isak. Liverpool were comprehensively beaten, but the 75-minute display from the academy product offered one of the few positives before Ngumoha took his place.

Gerrard, who played alongside Koumas’ father Jason during their own academy years, praised both the player’s character and the family connection. He recalled Jason Koumas as an excellent, two-footed midfielder and said he had enjoyed playing with him when they were younger.

For Gerrard, the significance of the occasion went beyond the result. Koumas had previously received limited first-team minutes, but his first Premier League start came in one of the most difficult possible fixtures: Manchester City at Anfield.

“I’m delighted for him,” Gerrard said. “He was put straight into the deep end. A first league start at home to Manchester City is a huge occasion, and he did himself and the academy proud.”

The former Liverpool captain did not suggest that the forward is the finished product. He felt Koumas was occasionally untidy in possession and will need detailed coaching as he develops. Yet Gerrard believed the youngster showed the resilience, work rate and willingness to compete needed at senior level.

“There is a lot still to improve, but there is also plenty of potential,” Gerrard added. “In terms of being ready to work, fight for the team, represent the supporters and carry the academy with him, he did not look like a youth player. He played like a man.”

Gerrard’s view was that Koumas had demonstrated enough to remain part of Liverpool’s plans, provided the club gives him the right support and individual development work. He called on Iraola to retain faith in the young forward as he seeks to turn promise into consistent Premier League contribution.

Jamie Carragher also singled out Koumas for credit, alongside fellow youngster Victor Munoz. Carragher argued that the two emerging players offered more than Liverpool’s costly attacking recruits during the defeat, and said established figures had failed to provide sufficient support.

“Bradley Barcola and Florian Wirtz have to step up and help Munoz and Koumas higher up the pitch,” Carragher said. “Koumas and Munoz were better than two £100m players. That cannot be right.”

With Liverpool down to 10 men, the match became still more difficult, but Koumas’ response left Gerrard convinced that the academy forward has the temperament to handle bigger opportunities ahead.
