Intel “Nova Lake” Leak Hints at Core Ultra Renaming Back to 4-Digit Codes
A new Intel CPU naming rumor is making the rounds after a CPU-Z screenshot appeared online for an upcoming “Nova Lake” chip, and it could signal a major marketing change for Intel’s Core Ultra line. If the leak holds up, Intel may move back to four digits in its product names instead of three—something that would matter a lot for PC builders trying to compare generations at a glance.
The hardware leaker and YouTuber Laurent’s Choice (posting under the LC Tech Leaks handle on X) shared what it claims is a CPU-Z readout for a Nova Lake processor with 28 total cores. The breakdown in the screenshot points to 8 performance cores and 20 E-cores, with an expected split of 16 E-cores and 4 LPE cores. Under that configuration, the chip is reportedly labeled as “Core Ultra 9 4950K.”
Not everyone is convinced. In the comments around the post, several users questioned the naming and suggested the leak could be fake. Their concern is that Intel’s prior Core i schemes—such as those tied to Ivy Bridge and Haswell—used a similar style of model numbering, including “Core i-4000” style naming, which they argue could make the new four-digit idea look too convenient or confusing.
Even if the number does appear, it may not be the final retail name. Some possibilities raised alongside the leak include Intel using “Core Ultra 9 4950K” only temporarily, for example during internal testing, or that qualification samples have not yet been assigned their definitive branding. That said, the leak’s claim about four digits is said to have additional support from other community sources: an X user named Gotou_3rd, who has reportedly shown up less often in leaks, also claims the four-digit naming is accurate, though there’s little public track record to fully weigh that credibility.
Further backing for the four-digit approach comes from Golden Pig Upgrade, described as being active in Chinese board-channel discussions. This claim extends beyond desktop naming: the user says Nova Lake mobile CPUs with an HX suffix would also use four digits. The reasoning offered is that Intel will launch enough chips next generation that three-digit naming—used for Arrow Lake—is no longer sufficient to cover the lineup.
The leak didn’t stop at naming. LC Tech Leaks also shared CPU-Z performance figures for the supposed Core Ultra 9 4950K. The screenshot suggests roughly 1,000 points in a single-core test and about 20,000 points in a multi-core test. Those numbers, if representative, would place the chip ahead of other desktop CPUs in that validator context—but with no confirmed testing on final hardware, the results remain unverified and shouldn’t be treated as buying guidance.
As for when Nova Lake might actually arrive, there’s currently no firm release schedule. Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan has only said the CPUs are “on track” for 2026. The rumor mill points to CES 2027 as a plausible moment for an announcement, while earlier remarks from Intel’s Robert Hallock indicate the first products would target desktop PCs. Meanwhile, AMD’s focus for Zen 6 has been framed as prioritizing AI compute for data centers.
For PC gamers and upgraders, the biggest practical impact of a four-digit naming return would be how quickly you can compare CPUs across generations. If Intel changes the model-number pattern again, it could temporarily make it harder to interpret where a chip sits relative to older Core i-4000-era parts. And while the leaked CPU-Z numbers hint at strong performance, they are still only screenshots and unconfirmed validation—so anyone planning a new gaming PC is still advised to wait for Intel’s official model names, finalized specs, and independent benchmarks once the hardware is actually on the market.
