How to Find and Upgrade the Wind Staff in Black Ops Zombies: Origins
The Wind Staff—along with its upgraded form, Boreas’ Fury—is one of the strongest and most straightforward staff options you can chase in Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies on Origins (including both Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 3). If you’re trying to figure out where to find the Wind Staff parts, how to assemble the weapon, and what you need to do to power it up, this guide walks you through the process step by step—so you can focus on surviving instead of getting crushed by the robot hazards.
To start, you’ll want to complete the “Little Lost Girl” easter egg on Origins. You can do it solo or in co-op, and this walkthrough is designed to explain each stage clearly so you don’t get lost mid-run.
How to Build the Wind Staff in Origins
Step #1: Acquire the Yellow Disc
- Check a crate directly across from the Lightning Tunnel entrance at Generator 5.
- Look on a broken wall to the right of Stamin-Up at Generator 5.
- Find it on a workbench to the left as soon as you enter the Lightning Tunnel at Generator 5.
Step #2: Obtain the Three Staff Parts
- Shoot beneath the foot of Thor, the Giant Robot that moves through the route toward Generator 2.
- Shoot beneath the foot of Odin, the Giant Robot that travels through No Man’s Land from Generator 5 to Generator 4.
- Shoot beneath the foot of Freya, the Giant Robot that walks through the Church.
Pay close attention: you need to stand under the Giant Robot foot that has yellow lights underneath it. Once you’re in the right spot, fire at it with any gun to trigger the opening—if you don’t line up correctly, you can get killed by the crushing impact.
Step #3: Get the Wind Staff Crystal & Build the Staff
With the Yellow Disc and the Gramophone secured (you pick the Gramophone up from around the mound), head to the Wind Tunnel at Generator 4. Place both items on the table there to open a portal into the “Crazy Place.”
Move toward the yellow pillar inside. It rises, and the yellow Wind Crystal appears for you to collect. Grab it, then exit the Crazy Place. From there, go down the stairs of Pack-a-Punch into the staff chamber and craft the Wind Staff at the left statue.
How to Upgrade the Wind Staff in Origins
Step #1: Solve the Wind Staff Puzzle
After you’ve built the Wind Staff, return to the Crazy Place. Find the corner with the yellow teleporter pad. In that area, you’ll also spot distinct ceiling markings: four rings that you can rotate by shooting them using the Wind Staff.
Your job is to shoot the rings so the symbols line up with the reference image shown above. The symbol order stays the same no matter what run you’re on. Follow that sequence from the outer dials inward, and once you’ve matched it correctly you’ll get an audio cue letting you know it’s time to leave the Crazy Place again.
Step #2: Re-Focus the Smokestacks
Next, there are three smokestacks you must shoot with the Wind Staff. The goal is simple: adjust them so the black smoke is directed toward Pack-a-Punch.
- Just to the right of Generator 4, shoot the smokestack so it blows smoke toward Pack-a-Punch.
- Cross the tank path that runs from the Church to Generator 5. On the right side near the wooden sign, you’ll spot another smokestack—shoot it so it again aims toward Pack-a-Punch.
- At Generator 5, behind Stamin-Up and by the tank along the wall, locate the final smokestack and shoot it toward Pack-a-Punch.
If all three smokestacks are correctly pointing their smoke toward the mound, a beam of light will rise from the sky—confirming you completed this step properly.
Step #3: Shoot the Yellow Orb
Now head back to the area under Pack-a-Punch where you originally crafted the Wind Staff. You’ll see a yellow orb. Run across the scaffolding and interact with the four levers mounted there until every symbol on the dials turns yellow.
Once all four symbols are lit yellow, descend the stairs and look up. The yellow orb can now be shot using the Wind Staff. When you fire it, the orb gets sent to the Crazy Place—where you’ll go next.
Step #4: Feed the Wind Staff Zombie Souls
Return to the Crazy Place for the final time. Place the Wind Staff on the yellow podium where you originally collected the crystal. After that, you need to earn roughly 20 zombie kills inside the Crazy Place to feed souls into the weapon.
When enough souls are collected, the Wind Staff upgrades into Boreas’ Fury.
Is the Wind Staff the Best Staff in Origins?
It’s debatable, but in my view the Wind Staff is the best staff in Origins. I like using it when I’m getting cornered or overwhelmed, because it lets you blast zombies away from your position and regain space fast.
In practice, the Wind Staff functions similarly to the Thunder Gun, but its blasts are both more lethal and faster to fire. On top of that, Boreas’ Fury’s upgraded alternate fire mode can revive players instantly, which adds a major team-saving benefit. The one knock is that the Wind Staff doesn’t have the same ammunition approach as the Ice Staff, so it’s a pretty even comparison depending on your playstyle.
If you want to build every staff in Origins for both Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 3, the remaining guides cover the Fire Staff, Ice Staff, Wind Staff (this one), and Lightning Staff.
