How to Earn and Upgrade the Hell’s Redeemer in Black Ops 2 Mob of the Dead
Mob of the Dead is packed with secrets, but few tools hit as hard as the Hell’s Retriever and its upgraded form, the Hell’s Redeemer. If you’re trying to earn the Hell’s Redeemer (and its upgrade) in Black Ops 2’s Mob of the Dead, this guide walks you through every step.
Nobody walks out alive in Mob of the Dead, but a well-executed easter egg run can give you a much better shot at breaking the cycle in Black Ops 2.
How to Get the Hell’s Retriever in Mob of the Dead
To start, you’ll need to kill 6 zombies around 3 dog heads positioned in set spots across the map. When each zombie dies, it flips, and that animation signals the dog is about to be pulled into the dog’s mouth and eaten.
Here are all the dog head locations you’ll need:
Quick facts: dog head spots
- In the Broadway cell block, near the B23R wall-buy. It’s up the stairs from spawn.
- In the Infirmary, just by the entryway that leads to the Roof.
- Near the workbench in the lower Docks area, under the bridge that takes you toward Jugger-Nog.
After all three dogs have been fed and they vanish, move to the Citadel Tunnels. Go to the right, and you’ll find a tunnel that’s now open—inside is the Hell’s Retriever.
The Hell’s Retriever is activated with the Tactical button (L1/LB). Holding the button lets you deal more damage and pull Power-Ups from farther away. It’s also designed to always return, so you can’t permanently lose it once you throw it.
How to Get the Hell’s Redeemer in Mob of the Dead
Once you have the Hell’s Retriever, you’ll need to kill 10 to 15 zombies with it. When you do, you’ll hear an Afterlife audio cue.
Next, you must reach the Golden Gate Bridge via the plane on Round 10+, then use the Hell’s Retriever for an entire round to trigger another audio cue.
After that, head back toward the Broadway cell block—specifically the area where you found the first dog head—and look down into the lava pit below. You need to throw the Hell’s Retriever into the lava pit so it disappears from your loadout.
Then simply end the round. At the beginning of the next round, enter Afterlife in the Citadel Docks, where you can pick up the Hell’s Redeemer from the same general spot where the Hell’s Retriever was obtained.
The Hell’s Redeemer can insta-kill any zombie, and it can also kill Brutus as long as his helmet is off—provided you charge it at least once by holding L1/LB. You can also charge it up to three times total, which is shown by the pulses you see while holding the button.
