Walkthrough Part 8 : Hailfire Peaks

You can reach Hailfire Peaks only after finishing the seventh Jiggywiggy Challenge. Start from the small structure on Clifftop and make your way over to the area.

Hailfire Peaks is split into two distinct themes: a Lava Side and an Ice Side. Each half has its own boss—twin dragons—that periodically harass you with elemental “hailfire” attacks while you explore. Because of that, it’s smart to take both bosses down early so their projectiles don’t slow you down later.

Refugees From Previous Levels

A few important missions from earlier worlds will add fresh tasks inside Hailfire Peaks. Use the relevant walkthroughs for those previous chapters to figure out what you need to have completed before coming here.

1. Gobi the Camel shows up at the Lava Train Station if you freed him in Witchyworld.

2. The Boggy family of bears appears in the igloo on the Icy Side after you helped reunite them in Witchyworld.

3. The UFO, along with its alien Captain, Alph (and family), will appear on the Ice Side of Hailfire and unlock an additional Jiggy challenge.

How to Explore Hailfire Peaks

The Lava and Ice sections connect through glowing passages: light blue for the Icy Side and red for the Lava Side. You can travel between them whenever you can handle the climb (some routes aren’t friendly to Banjo and Mumbo—ramps can be too slippery for them, for instance). Still, it’s best to unlock the Warp Pads as soon as you can. Also, since the bosses are the source of the elemental hailfire harassment, deal with both of them early to reduce the annoyance while you’re moving around. For more on the world’s objectives, check the “Hailfire Peak Jiggies” area.

After that, your next priority is the tunnel shortcut on the Lava Side. Look for a button on the far left side of the zone.

Step on the switch, and a shortcut opens between the area’s handy Flight Pad and the explorer’s tent located closer to the Warp Pad.

Using this passage is much safer than taking the long route around the outside.

There’s also a shortcut linking Wumba’s tent and Mumbo’s Skull, which becomes especially useful because the Warp Pads aren’t as conveniently close to those two buildings as they were in earlier levels. To open the route, blast the crack inside Mumbo’s Skull with a Grenade Egg, then you’ll arrive from behind the flag at Wumba’s. You can trigger this from either side.

One more hazard to remember: many ledges in Hailfire Peaks have fiery cracks embedded in them. If you get too close, a burning hand will burst out, dealing damage—or even worse—knocking you down into the lava. Move carefully and approach with patience. If you’re trying to move fast, you can also burn through golden feathers by dashing through with your invisibility technique.

There are several switches throughout Hailfire Peaks. Most can be triggered using either Banjo or Kazooie, but some of the heavier switches demand extra weight.

So if you notice a large train switch, or a power switch near the oil pump, plan to return once you’ve handled Wumba’s most recent transformation.

Not One, But Two Train Stations

Hailfire Peaks really does have two train stations—one on the Lava Side and one on the Ice Side.

To open the gates, you’ll also need two matching station buttons. One button is located outside the Colosseum on the Lava Side, while the other is a large button placed in the lower section of the Icy Side. The main restriction is that Chuffy can’t travel to the Fire Side unless the tank engine is cooled down first.

For specifics on where to find and activate each button, consult the Hailfire Peaks Jiggies section.

Mumbo Jumbo’s Skull: Life Force

On the Lava Side, collect the Glowbo from the ruined building underneath the Skull. This cooling lava area is safe to cross on foot.

Take Mumbo through the hidden passage that connects to Humba’s Wigwam (details below), then bring him outside. His Life Force magic will be needed repeatedly to restore some frozen souls on the Icy Side.

When you take control as Mumbo for the first time, go up the path that turns to the right and use the Mumbo Pad inside the ice cube to bring the alien dad back to life. Even if he begs for help, ignore him for now and continue toward the igloo on the lower level. Immediately past that igloo, you’ll find another Mumbo Pad—use it to revive the lost explorer.

After Banjo and Kazooie free Wumba from her ice block, you’ll need to use Mumbo’s magic again to revive the frozen alien baby near Wumba’s Wigwam.

Humba Wumba’s Wigwam: Snowball

On the Icy Side, the Glowbo hangs around the waterfront. Use Grip Grab on a crack in the canyon wall to move around the deep water to reach the other side where the Glowbo is.

Inside Humba Wumba’s Wigwam, walk through the blue blanket mounted on the wall. At the end of the secret passage, shoot the wall to appear inside Mumbo’s Skull.

Humba’s icy magic transforms you into a Snowball. As with any snowball form, you grow larger when you roll through snow, but you shrink when you touch a heat source. Losing a honeycomb triggers the same shrink effect, while collecting or replenishing a honeycomb will make the Snowball grow again.

One of the key tasks for the Snowball form is unlocking the gates of the Ice Train Station. Build yourself up as large as possible, then roll past the Warp Pad close to the teepee to reach the Train Button sitting on top of the icy pedestal.

You’ll also need to press the button at the entrance of the Icy Side and activate the oil pump connected to a pipeline. The catch is that you’ll have to guide a Snowball through “Hell” to get the job done.

Warp to the Fire Side’s upper area, then follow the ledge to the left until you reach the next tunnel. Don’t stay around—this section is hot, so your snow will melt naturally. Eventually, you’ll come back to the Icy Side, where you can regain your size. Once you’re enormous again, roll onto the button on top of the oil rig to start up the pump.

There’s one final Snowball objective: roll off the lower ledge and locate the Jinjo near the windy cave.
